Before his ordination, his name was Hegumen Botros El-Shamy—attributed to El-Shamiya, his birthplace in Assiut. He served for a period as the deputy (vicar) of El-Muharraq Monastery until Pope Cyrillos V ordained him as a bishop and abbot of the monastery under the name Anba Pachomius in the year 1896 AD, becoming the first bishop to be ordained over a monastery in the history of the Coptic Church.
Loyalty and Appreciation to Hegumen Salib Wehba
Hegumen Salib Wehba hailed from Kom Badr in Tahta. He embraced monasticism in 1864 AD and was ordained as a priest in 1870 AD. His life bears witness that he was an examplar of piety and activity; therefore, he was appointed as a deputy and then as the abbot of El-Muharraq Monastery in 1884 AD. He purchased 1,250 acres (feddans) of land and ordained twenty-six monks. During his presidency, Pope Cyrillos V, in the year 1896 AD, ordained Hegumen Botros El-Shamy as bishop of the monastery under the name Anba Pachomius—which is a Greek word written in Coptic as (Pa'wm) meaning "Eagle."
Hegumen Salib requested to resign, but the monks refused out of their love for him. Consequently, Anba Pachomius managed affairs when he was present at the monastery or at the monastery's headquarters in Manfalut, and he did not dismiss Hegumen Salib until the latter's repose in 1905 AD.
Founding the Monks' School
Anba Pachomius was simple, yet he possessed the mindset of great thinkers. The nobility of his thought was manifested through the architecture of the monastery, which is unparalleled among our monasteries, as well as through his founding of the Monks' School. He believed in the importance of knowledge for a monk and its impact on his spiritual life; therefore, he established a theological school for them and brought qualified teachers from the Theological Seminary in Cairo. The lectures were delivered to the monks on the upper floor of the Church of Saint George until Hegumen Tadros Asaad, the abbot of the monastery, constructed a dedicated building for the school. Eminent scholars taught at the school, most notably: Hegumen Youhanna Salama El-Muharraqi, author of the book "The Precious Pearls", Hegumen Abdel-Messih Nakhla, and Mr. Shaker Basilios, the renowned scholar of the Coptic language.
Reform Movement
In the past, monks used to labor with their hands in cultivating lands, raising livestock, and baking bread. This exhausting work distanced them from their cells and distracted them from the spiritual life for which they had left the world. Therefore, Anba Pachomius requested that manual labor be assigned to workers receiving monthly wages, restricting the role of the monks to supervision only. Through this, his wisdom and experience became evident, and the spiritual life of the monks within the monastery flourished.
Furthermore, the celebrations held during the monastery's festival seasons were a source of stumbling for the monks due to the improper actions that occurred during them. Some monks used to rent out a room of their cell to visitors while living in the other room for a financial return. Consequently, the cells lost their sanctity, and chaos prevailed in the cells' area, to the extent that Saint Mikhail El-Behairi used to seclude himself inside his cell during festival days. Thus, Anba Pachomius ordered the abolition of these celebrations from the monastery and established stipends for the monks so they would not rent out their cells or seek assistance from their relatives or acquaintances.
It is recorded that during the episcopate of His Grace Anba Pachomius, the number of those who embraced monasticism at El-Muharraq Monastery reached forty-eight monks.
The Greatest Work
Anba Pachomius believed in the importance of a healthy life for a monk, as it leads him to worship in an orderly manner and guides him to a stable psychological life away from the disturbances caused by illnesses. It also enables him to invest his time in fruitful endeavors. All those who neglected their health or went to extremes in their asceticism spent their lives moving between doctors and hospitals without gaining anything! For no one is crowned "unless he competes according to the rules" (2 Timothy 2:5). Therefore, he decided to build the monastery according to the latest sanitary and architectural standards, bringing foreign experts to draft the designs, such as Somers Clark (1841–1926 AD), the architect of Saint Paul's Cathedral in London. Clark was an architect and scholar born in Brighton, England, who specialized in the study of architecture and archaeological restoration; attracted by the beauty of Egypt, he continued to work there until his death. Among his most important works is the book: "Christian Antiquities in the Nile Valley", published in Oxford in 1912 AD.
In 1910 AD, Anba Pachomius purchased a plot of land in the city of Assiut, on which he constructed commercial rental buildings, completed in 1924 AD. In 1919 AD, he also purchased a plot of land for construction in the town of Nazali in Qusqam, in addition to purchasing the Karout land. He bought twenty machines to irrigate these lands, becoming the first to introduce a water-pumping machine to the monastery. Between 1907 and 1910 AD, he built a headquarters for the abbot of the monastery containing several rooms to receive church leaders and high-profile figures. In front of it, he established the Wasiya building to accommodate the companions of the palace's guests and those working in the monastery's accounting departments.
Anba Pachomius reached a pinnacle of brilliant planning and management when he established a railway line between the monastery and the mountain to transport stones using mule-drawn carts. This was done to build the monastery's walls in 1920 AD, designed in the likeness of the walls of Jerusalem at a height of twelve meters. Likewise, in 1926 AD, he commenced the construction of the monks' cells, which were distinguished by their large size.
A Miracle
In his book about El-Muharraq Monastery (pp. 116–117), His Grace Anba Gregorios, Bishop of Scientific Research, mentioned a miracle that occurred during the presidency of Anba Pachomius at El-Muharraq Monastery, writing the following:
Some of the elder monks narrated a wonderful event that has no parallel in all of our Egyptian churches: On the night of the Feast of the Holy Resurrection in one of the years, while the lights were extinguished and the altar was closed during the performance of the ritual representing the Resurrection of Christ, Anba Pachomius I, the late bishop of the monastery who departed in 1928 AD, was inside the sanctuary of the ancient Church of the Virgin Mary accompanied by some priests and deacons from among the monks. After he began lifting the altar veils that covered the icon of the Resurrection, one after the other, until he reached the spices (Hanut) in which the Holy Cross was buried, he extended his hand to search for the Cross. However, he was unable to reach it because he felt that his hand had become extremely heavy. Astounded by this, he forced himself and extended his hand further, but his hand trembled. He wept, seeing in this a sign of his sinfulness and unworthiness. He attempted for the third time, and lo, he finally reached the Cross. Suddenly, a great light burst forth from the icon and the Cross, filling the entire church inside and outside the sanctuary. It was a joy beyond parallel; the bishop was comforted, and the monks were revived with spiritual joy and glorified God. Those who are still alive among them still remember this incident which they witnessed with their own eyes. Two of the elder monks—the late Hegumen Arsenius El-Muharraqi and Hegumen Botros Wasef El-Muharraqi—confirmed to me that they were inside the sanctuary with the bishop when this glorious light appeared. Undoubtedly, this miracle is a unique historical event, which certainly has no parallel in any other church in the world except for the Church of the Holy Sepulchre (Church of the Resurrection) in the city of our God, Jerusalem. This honor has added new evidence to the value of the ancient Church of the Virgin.
