Hegumen Abdel-Messih El-Masoudi the Elder is one of three virtuous monks whose names are similar. They are: Hegumen Abdel-Messih Girgis El-Masoudi El-Muharraqi, who lived for twenty-two years as a monk at El-Muharraq Monastery, then went to El-Paromeos Monastery where he spent the rest of his life; Hegumen Abdel-Messih El-Masoudi bin Abdel-Malak El-Muharraqi the Intermediate, who embraced monasticism and reposed at El-Muharraq Monastery; and Hegumen Abdel-Messih El-Masoudi the Younger El-Paromeosi, who embraced monasticism and reposed at El-Paromeos Monastery.
Hegumen Abdel-Messih El-Masoudi the Elder
In 1818 AD, Hegumen Abdel-Messih El-Masoudi the Elder was born in the village of Sheikh Masoud in Tahta, which is why he was titled "El-Masoudi". His father, Girgis, and his mother, Sayeda, were renowned for their piety. He was the second among four siblings: Euphrosyne, Abdel-Messih, Aziza, and Salib.
Abdel-Messih did not remain long in the world; he went to El-Muharraq Monastery in 1835 AD at the age of seventeen, where he embraced monasticism in the same year. He won the love and esteem of the monks due to his abundant spiritual and scholarly gifts, as he was spiritual, scholarly, ascetic, chaste, struggling, faithful, bold, humble, and loving.
His sister, Aziza, embraced monasticism at Saint George Convent in Haret Zuweila. When the heart of his brother, Salib, burned for the monastic life, he left home and went to El-Muharraq Monastery to receive the crown of virginity. However, his father and his sister, Euphrosyne, went to him, met with him, and asked him to return home with them. Father Abdel-Messih, who was present with them, felt grieved and said to them: "He who concerns himself with the salvation of his soul is the winner, even if he has left his family and home." Consequently, Salib returned home, married his cousin Mary, and fathered: Ibrahim, Abdel-Messih, Girgis, Samaan, Bishara, Safina, and Justina.
Within two years, the monk Abdel-Messih received the grace of the priesthood and the rank of Hegumen.
Going to El-Paromeos Monastery
In 1857 AD, Hegumen Abdel-Messih El-Masoudi, along with a group of monks, revolted against the abbot of the monastery, Hegumen Abdel-Malak El-Houri, claiming that he was distributing the monastery's funds to his family. They went to Pope Cyrillos IV (1854–1861 AD), who found that their complaint was simple and did not warrant such an uproar. This was a factual reality, as Hegumen Abdel-Malak El-Houri was known to have recovered some of the monastery's lands from usurpers. Therefore, the Pope did not permit them to return to El-Muharraq Monastery and ordered them to go to El-Paromeos Monastery. He obeyed and went there, accompanied by Hegumens: Hanna, Misak, Mikhail El-Ashqawi, and others. After he left the monastery, one of the monks said of him: "He is a gem that has departed from the monastery!"
Among the remarkable events, when Hegumen Abdel-Messih had previously visited El-Paromeos Monastery while he was still at El-Muharraq Monastery, he admired it greatly, loved it, and said: "If I had not embraced monasticism at El-Muharraq Monastery, I would have preferred to do so at El-Paromeos Monastery." Therefore, he lived happily in that monastery, considering the troubles he faced as a sign for him to spend the remainder of his life in the thriving El-Paromeos Monastery.
The Testimony of Hegumen Mark El-Balouti
His disciple, Hegumen Mark El-Balouti, testified of him, saying: "He used to spend the night in prayer and praise with abundant tears. He spent his day reading the Holy Bible and the books of the monastic fathers until the ninth hour of the day, after which he would stand for prayer until sunset. Following that, he would sleep for two or three hours, then wake up to spend the entire night awake in prayer. He was ascetic, possessing no money or garments other than what covered his body. He was merciful, loving toward the monks, cheerful, smiling, wise, and his face was radiant like the angels."
Nun Safina, who was well-versed in the Holy Bible, brilliant in the Coptic language, embraced monasticism at Saint Philopater Mercurius (Abu Seifein) Convent, and lived between 1909 and 1928 AD, narrated about her uncle, Hegumen Abdel-Messih El-Masoudi, in a manuscript written by her own hand: "Three lights, stars, or great pillars gathered in El-Paromeos Monastery. They contributed greatly to the conditions of the monastery and its monastic and spiritual growth. They are the three spiritual and hardworking men, teachers of virtue to their children: the blessed father, Elder Awad El-Berhimy, who was considered the oldest among those present in the monastery at the time, and who was blind of sight but enlightened of spiritual insight—remarkably, he served as the custodian of the monastery with rare efficiency for many years; the gentle father, full of mercy and compassion, who resembled a tender nurse possessing patience, endurance, and long-suffering, Hegumen Youhanna the Scribe, who later became Pope Cyrillos V; and Hegumen Abdel-Messih El-Masoudi the Elder, whom they appointed as a father of confession for all the fathers due to his abundant knowledge, deeds, and piety."
Hegumen Abdel-Messih as Custodian of El-Paromeos Monastery
In 1875 AD, Hegumen Youhanna the Scribe became Patriarch under the name: Pope Cyrillos V. Consequently, Hegumen Abdel-Messih was chosen in his place as an assistant to Father Awad El-Berhimy in managing the affairs of the monastery. In the year 1878 AD, Hegumen Awad reposed, and Hegumen Abdel-Messih assumed the custodianship of the monastery. He bore the responsibility with absolute faithfulness, carrying out restoration works for the monastery's ancient wall and facilities, and renewing the Church of Saint John in 1884 AD. Later, he began to step down from some of the management responsibilities of the monastery out of his love for the life of stillness and solitude. In 1897 AD, he permanently relinquished the administrative matters of the monastery.
Declining the Episcopate
Hegumen Abdel-Messih El-Masoudi loved monasticism in its essence as a life of prayer, contemplation, reading, and asceticism, in addition to his intense love for retreat and his inclination toward solitude. Therefore, he had no desire to leave monasticism and descend into the world for service, despite his vast knowledge and deep spiritual experience. Thus, when he was nominated to become Bishop of the See of Assiut, he apologized and declined, and Pope Demetrius II (1862–1870 AD) did not compel him. He declined a second time when he was nominated to become Metropolitan of the See of Ethiopia, and his apology was accepted by Pope Cyrillos V (1874–1927 AD).
His Letter to Pope Cyrillos V
Hegumen Abdel-Messih El-Masoudi was a contemporary of Pope Cyrillos V when the latter was a monk at El-Paromeos Monastery under the name: Hegumen Youhanna the Scribe. The relationship between them was firm, filled with overflowing love, mutual respect, and utmost trust. Therefore, after his ordination as Patriarch, the Pope sent a letter to Hegumen Abdel-Messih asking him about the asceticism that a monk should adorn himself with. In response, he wrote him an article of the highest spirituality and eloquence, titled: "To Every Monk Who Wishes to Live a Sound Ascetic Life." It was published by Mr. Farid Kamel in October 1933 AD. Due to its spiritual value, we excerpt the following from it:
"From the servant of God who calls in the name of God to the lover of God... This is my commandment to you, O man of God, to cast your hope upon Jesus your Lord, the Only-Begotten of God, so that your judgment may be correct and your endeavor may succeed by the help of God, and that you may be saved from a stubborn demon and from every whispering that angers God.
Rather, I ask you, my beloved, to entrust every deed of your deeds to the dispensation of God, so that your heart may rest and your condition may be upright under the care of God. Beware of leaning toward what opposes God. In all your matters, submit to the decree of God; you will be safe from dangers and prohibitions, and the eye of God will watch over you. If you are afflicted with harm from the evilest of people, then practice patience, long-suffering, and obedience to God. Cast away from yourself the instincts of beasts and adopt the manners of the children of God. Suppress anger and dispel wrath if they are moved without the purpose of God, so that you may avoid punishment and torment and obtain the forgiveness of God. Rather, forgive those who wrong you among the servants of God, so that you may attain the forgiveness of your sins from God.
If you see a flaw in one of God's creation, conceal the flaw out of honor for the Beloved Jesus, the brightness of the glory of God, while your sins and flaws will be concealed by God. Deal with mercy and compassion toward all people, so that God may have mercy on you and God may have compassion on you. Avoid those who are unmindful of the law of God, lest they distract you from looking to God, hinder you from seeking God, and deprive you of the sweetness of intimacy with God. Be sincere in intention and pure in heart with people and with God. I ask you, my companion, by God, not to occupy your mind with other than God, and to follow the steps of Jesus your Lord, the express image of the substance of God, and consecrate to Him your body, your soul, your speech, and your deed. Keep your secret concealed from anyone who does not safeguard his own secret, does not revere his Lord, and does not fear God. I command you to practice sincere repentance and sever the connection of every matter that separates you from God, so that you may possess boldness before God. Restrain, my beloved, the desires of the flesh, lessen your food, diminish your sleep, and be brief in speech regarding everything that is outside the praise of God. Persevere in supplication, with heart and tongue, in the name of Jesus, the wisdom of God, so that He may cover your mind and enlighten your intellect.
You must practice total detachment and voluntary poverty, my beloved. Beware of letting your concern be with amusement, music, and play rather than your concern with God, lest your heart grow callous. Do not settle a matter in all your words and deeds unless you have a testimony for it from the law of God. The summary of the matter is to leave everything for the sake of God, so that you may be entirely the property of God, thereby deserving to be the friend of God. Do not occupy your mind for a single moment with other than the remembrance of God, let your heart contain nothing bad except God, and do not touch anything other than God. The First is God, the Last is God, the Inward is God, the Outward is God, the Living is God, the Abiding is God, and glory and praise belong to God. From the one who calls in the name of God, to the lover of God."
Written on 12 Parmouti, 1603 of the Martyrs.
Hegumen Abdel-Messih El-Masoudi
His Solitude and Virtues
Hegumen Abdel-Messih spent fifteen years in solitude, in a cave and sometimes in the keep (the fortress). He used to return to the monastery on the eve of Sundays to attend the Divine Liturgy and partake of the Holy Sacraments, then return to his solitude. He used to copy and bind manuscripts, and make leather belts and the Schema from leather.
He used to pray the one hundred and fifty Psalms daily, and recite prayers of the saints: Saint Ephrem the Syrian, Saint Isaac, the Spiritual Elder, and Jacob of Serugh, which were collected in a small book.
He fasted frequently, performed many prostrations (metanias), and offered extemporaneous prayers with abundant tears and a broken heart. He was passionate about reading the Holy Bible and the books of the fathers.
Hegumen Abdel-Messih was distinguished by his eloquence, the beauty of his style, and the strength of his argument, having a great impact on his listeners. Faithfulness was a clear pattern in his serious and venerable personality; he did not like joking and never uttered words of jest.
It is established about him that since he left his home, he never returned to it again. When he went to visit the Pope, he would return after three days, and at certain times, he went to El-Muharraq Monastery to meet members of his family.
His Teachings
In his teachings, Hegumen Abdel-Messih El-Masoudi focused on the necessity for a monk to be faithful in his monastic life and his ascetic approach. He emphasized persevering in prayer, fasting, confession, and partaking of the Holy Sacraments, preserving chastity, maintaining purity of thought, staying away from words of jest, and adorning oneself with silence, reverence, and obedience.
