By: Fr. Karas Al-Muharraqy

We can never give him his full due, no matter how much tongues speak in praise or hands write words of loyalty. He was a shining star in the sky of knowledge; his light expanded and spread, a beam radiating brilliance that transformed his students into scholars. Among them were Pope Shenouda III, Anba Gregory, and Archpriest (Hegumen) Paul Basili. He is the venerable scholar and able teacher, Archpriest Mikhail Matta, professor of the Old Testament, Biblical Geography, and Homiletics at the Theological Seminary of Al-Muharraq Monastery.
Birth and Childhood
Winter arrived, bringing dewdrops that scattered like beautiful pearls upon the crowns of flowers to adorn them, and rain like silver threads cast by the sky upon nature to embellish its valleys. On December 25, 1910, the child "Kamel" cried out, announcing his arrival into our world. His virtuous mother, "Sayeda Hanna Abdel-Malak Al-Miri," took him into her tender hands and pressed him to her bosom like a beautiful rose, wishing to inhale its fragrance and adorn her chest with it.
Days passed, and the family of Matta the Archpriest lived in a feast of ceaseless joy. This joy was completed with the baptism of the child Kamel, who appeared in his white garments like an angel clothed by heaven in clothes of purity, with the gleam of hope radiating from his eyes.
Kamel grew up in a house that knew the meaning of suppliant hands and kneeling knees. His grandfather, Archpriest Mikhail, the priest Hanna, used to gather the family in a wooden room on the rooftop of the house to pray the Psalms, read the Holy Bible, and explain its meanings.
When he reached the age of six, Kamel joined the Mikhail Faltas School in Sanabo. He grew like a tree planted by the streams of the river of knowledge. However, the fragrance of spring does not last; winter came to fill the house with tears of grief. When Kamel was only eight years old, his mother departed to Paradise! The innocent child was left deprived of maternal tenderness and care, yet he experienced the Lord’s saying: "For a mere moment I have forsaken you, but with great mercies I will gather you." (Isaiah 54:7).
Joining the Theological Seminary
Kamel loved knowledge and wished to join the Faculty of Law to become a lawyer. Law was one of the prestigious faculties at the time, and advocacy was the profession of ministers and politicians in his era. However, his father wished for the tree of priesthood to remain fruitful in the family. The son submitted to his father's desire and joined the Theological Seminary in Mahmasha after obtaining his Baccalaureate in 1926, pouring himself out as an acceptable sacrifice before God. The light of faith emanated from his eyes, his lips spoke of the wondrous deeds of God, he increased further in grace, was filled with purity, and became a role model for the youth. At the Seminary, he studied under the prominent scholars of the Church: Archdeacon Habib Girgis, Archpriest Ibrahim Louka, Archpriest Ibrahim Attia, and Professor Samaan Seclides.
Founding the Coptic Endeavor Society (Al-Masa'y Al-Qebtya)
Professor Kamel recognized the role of Christian societies and their impact on service and spiritual activities. Therefore, he founded the Coptic Endeavor Society in 1932, where he preached and taught, offering numerous services to the needy and widows. The society was later relocated to the Ghiada area in Qousiya due to the limited space of land at the Church of St. John the Baptist, where it was originally established. Until now, the society includes a nursery and hosts spiritual activities and meetings under the supervision of Professor Emad Daniel Matta.
Teaching at the Theological Seminary
Archdeacon Habib Girgis noticed the brilliance, seriousness, noble spirit, and high morals of his student, Kamel Matta. As soon as Kamel obtained his diploma from the Theological Seminary in 1932—ranking first in his class consistently over the years—he was appointed as a professor of the Old and New Testaments, becoming a unique personality in mind, heart, and spirit.
What proves his extraordinary capability is that when the exam results were released, he never asked whether he passed or failed; rather, he always asked about the top student's score, saying: "How many marks did the top of the class receive?" This was because he was absolutely certain that he was always the first!
When Professor Kamel noticed that the Old Testament was being taught merely as a historical narrative of events and stories of the prophets, he authored new curriculum notes that included introductions to all the books of the Bible. His ambitions expanded, and he introduced a new subject to the seminary students: Biblical Geography. He taught it initially as geographical information, but after he visited Jerusalem, he excelled remarkably in explaining it. The students thoroughly enjoyed his lectures, feeling as though he was speaking about places he knew intimately. Thus, the saying truly applied to him: "He who possesses a will as solid as iron, a hand as open as the sea, and a mind as vast as space, is indeed one of the pioneers of development."
The Professor of Professors!
Our venerable scholar possessed the tools of an academic researcher and the traits of an eloquent preacher. When he supervised the Seminary library, he delved deeply into ecclesiastical sciences and mastered three languages: English, Coptic, and Arabic. At that time, university graduates began flocking to the Seminary to study, and many learned under his guidance, becoming servants and scholars. Among them, we mention: Pope Shenouda III, Anba Basilios (Metropolitan of the Jerusalem See), Anba Gregory (Bishop of Scientific Research), Anba Samuel (Bishop of Services), Anba Athanasius (Metropolitan of Beni Suef), Archpriest Salib Sourial in Giza, Archpriest Paul Paul in Damanhour, Archpriest Abdel-Messih Thaophilus Al-Nakhili in Heliopolis, and Archpriest Paul Basili in Shoubra.
Archpriest Paul Basili was deeply fascinated by his personality and knowledge, and once wrote him a letter expressing his feelings, from which we excerpt the following:
"My virtuous master and beloved professor, Kamel Effendi,
For the first time, I write to you expressing the pure, overflowing feelings that stir within my soul toward your beloved person. Perhaps this is the most opportune chance to reveal this sentiment latent in the folds of my heart, pent up within my chest for years... How often have I stood defending you, and how much have I spoken in your praise, because I saw in you the very truth of what I say. Indeed, in your knowledge, I touched abundance, and in your opinions and thoughts, I saw a freedom that I have long admired and marveled at, for you only say what you truly believe... This is what I experienced during my discipleship under you, and if this were the only benefit I gained from the school, it would be more than enough."
A Letter from Anba Gregory Showing His Status:
"My respected and venerable professor... I greet you with the reverence of a student who appreciates the virtue of his professor. Along with my greetings, I send my sincere affection, loyalty, and devotion, wishing your honor abundant health, overflowing grace, and divine strength for continuous success in your fruitful projects, by the grace of God and the prayers of the pure saints.
Furthermore, I have been commissioned by the meeting of all the professors to write to you, earnestly requesting and imploring you to kindly hasten your return to us, as the Theological Seminary will open its doors on Monday (October 9) to commence classes directly after we conclude the examinations... My fervent hope is that your honor will kindly accept my plea, and perhaps the professors are confident that my request will meet your acceptance; for this reason, they entrusted me with this honorable mission. I hope you will honor me and not deprive me of this privilege."
Your loving student,
Wahib Ata Allah (Anba Gregory)

Marriage, Family, and the Call to Priesthood
Professor Kamel did not have inclinations toward monastic life, but he loved the life of celibacy. His desire was to consecrate himself to science, away from the priesthood and monasticism. However, the notables of Qousiya nominated him for the priesthood. When he apologized, they asked His Grace Anba Agapius I, Metropolitan of Dayrut, Sanabo, and Qusqam (1929–1964), to convince him. The Bishop spoke with him and convinced him that the priesthood combines marital life with church service.
Consequently, he agreed and married Olga Yanni Megally in 1952. He fathered: Kamel, who became a priest and then an archpriest under the name Archpriest Paul on the altar of St. John the Baptist Church in Qousiya; Naji, who works in the health administration; and Mary, who works at the Ministry of Health.
The Grace of the Priesthood
Kamel Effendi became like a white cloud, appearing clearly, growing greater, and ascending until it filled the face of the sky; and behold, it poured down as drops of water to irrigate the flowers of the Church. The vessel of his life steered toward the shore of priesthood to become a servant of the altar. On August 25, 1953, the able teacher Kamel Matta stood before the sanctuary contrite, and in humility, bowed his head under the hand of Anba Agapius I, Metropolitan of Dayrut, Sanabo, and Qusqam, making hearts rejoice with gladness.
Following the ordination, tongues burst forth in thanksgiving and congratulations to the reverent priest, Father Mikhail Matta, priest of St. John's Church in Qousiya. A year later, he was elevated to the rank of Archpriest (Hegumen) by the hand of His Grace Anba Agapius.
Services and Activities
With steady steps, Archpriest Mikhail Matta used to walk through the narrow, dry alleys in the stillness of the dewless night to visit the people, solve their problems, and end disputes among them. Since his ordination, he dedicated himself to pastoral work, preaching, and education. He wrote many articles in religious magazines such as Sunday Schools (Madaris Al-Ahad), Al-Yaqaza (The Awakening), and Al-Mahabba (Love).
He did not neglect construction either, following the words of Jesus Christ: "These you ought to have done, without leaving the others undone." (Matthew 23:23). Thus, he renovated and expanded the Church of St. John the Baptist, adding a grand minaret (steeple) to it. He also founded a primary school affiliated with the Coptic Ladies' Society, which was later closed due to the intervention of the Ministry of Education in its management and the imposition of conditions that Archpriest Mikhail rejected.
When he noticed that students and employees were unable to pray and attend the Sunday Liturgy, he established an altar in 1975 named after Anba Abraam in St. John's Church. He began celebrating the Divine Liturgy on the official weekly holiday, Friday. This timing was a novel initiative, as the prevailing custom in churches at that time was to hold the liturgy only on Sundays.
The Severe Ordeal
On October 26, 1967, the wife of Archpriest Mikhail departed this life. He bore the burdens of the family and the pain of separation, remaining a widower for thirty-two years! Yet, a believer is like a green leaf that does not fall from the tree of virtue no matter how hard the storms blow. Hope is a window; no matter how small it is, it opens vast horizons in life.
This is exactly what happened with Archpriest Mikhail, as he focused on raising his children, increased his activities, and dedicated more time to his research after the departure of his wife. He taught us through his life just as he taught us through his sermons—that a virtuous priest is one who serves to draw a smile, wipe away a tear, and alleviate pain!
Teaching at the Theological Seminary of Al-Muharraq Monastery
When His Holiness Pope Shenouda III inaugurated a branch of the Theological Seminary at Al-Muharraq Monastery in 1973, he commissioned Archpriest Mikhail Matta to teach the Old Testament and Biblical Geography. He used to read the entire Book of the Prophet Isaiah—comprising sixty-six chapters—before heading to the seminary to deliver his lecture to the students on this magnificent book! Years later, he also taught both theoretical and practical homiletics, allowing the students to learn the art of preaching from an eloquent preacher.
It is told that he once attended three funerals in a single day and delivered three distinct sermons, without repeating a single phrase or Bible verse! A companion who accompanied him marveled and asked: "Why did you not just deliver one sermon and repeat it?" His answer was: "Funeral sermons are measured with a scale; each departed soul deserves words of consolation that uniquely suit their family and loved ones."
Archpriest Mikhail Matta continued to teach at the seminary until his final days, and the students held him in great awe due to the abundance of his knowledge and the strength of his personality.
Anba Gregory Praises Him
A Christian layman from the congregation of Qousiya sent a letter to His Grace Anba Gregory regarding personal matters. His Grace responded to him through the Watani newspaper on Sunday morning, February 3, 1980, stating:
"I suggest that you go to meet the reverend father, Archpriest Mikhail Matta, priest of St. John the Baptist Church in Qousiya. Present these matters to him and seek his guidance, for Father Mikhail Matta is a wise, seasoned man of vast experience... I trust greatly in his wisdom, experience, and sound judgment. It is in your best interest to benefit from his counsel, as he is an outstanding spiritual father, and by the grace of God, he will give you the right guidance."
Positions in the Life of Archpriest Mikhail Matta
Archpriest Mikhail Matta was distinguished by his strong personality and boldness. In the 1940s, he led press battles against the Community Council (Al-Majlis Al-Melli) in defense of ecclesiastical issues. He also wrote to President Gamal Abdel Nasser and government officials, requesting that places of worship—both churches and mosques—be treated equally regarding free electricity and water supplies, and his request was approved!
Our venerable scholar was a man of enlightened thought and broad horizons. He conducted many theological dialogues with figures from non-Orthodox churches, supporting his views with verses from the Holy Bible, which earned him the trust, appreciation, and respect of everyone. Furthermore, he was a prominent and influential member of the Middle East Council of Churches dialogues.
He also fostered cultural activities, establishing the "Wednesday Forum" in the 1970s, where prominent religious and cultural figures lectured. Archpriest Mikhail Matta himself delivered several lectures, including: The Origin of Man, The Trinity and Monotheism, The Holy Bible, Moses and Christ, and The Journey of the Children of Israel.
The Successful Priest as Seen by Archpriest Mikhail Matta
When asked about the characteristics of a successful priest, Archpriest Mikhail answered, addressing the priest:
  1. Priesthood is a service, so remain closely bonded with your congregation.
  2. Make the Church your primary focus and concern.
  3. Give honor to whom honor is due, and respect your leaders and your children.
  4. Be committed to church laws in both rituals and teaching.
  5. Arm yourself with knowledge; read the Holy Bible and explore all fields.
  6. Do not flatter anyone at the expense of the truth.
  7. Be a role model in everything and submit to the church leadership.
Departure (Departure to Paradise)
The spring of knowledge departed with its fragrant breezes, and the autumn of death arrived to reap its fruit. After a life that could be summarized in two words—preaching and teaching—Archpriest Mikhail fell ill and was admitted to Al-Zahraa Hospital in Asyut to undergo a prostate operation. An acute hemorrhage occurred, after which he departed to paradise on Sunday morning, October 3, 1999, to be crowned with the imperishable crown of life.
The body was brought to his home, where the priests shrouded him in his priestly vestments and placed him in his casket. They walked with him in a majestic funeral procession to the Church of St. John the Baptist. Crowds flocked to pay their final respects, and the sounds of weeping mingled with the tolling of the church bells, as they beheld the heart that never rested now still, and the eloquent preacher silent.
On Monday morning, Anba Thomas, Bishop of Qousiya, presided over the Divine Liturgy, joined by Anba Timothy, Bishop of Zagazig. Following the liturgy, the funeral prayers commenced, with the participation of Anba Sawiros (Abbot of Al-Muharraq Monastery), Anba Barsoum (Bishop of Dayrut), and Anba Pimen (Bishop of Naqada and Qus), alongside delegations of priests and various Christian denominations. Following the service, his body was laid to rest in the family cemetery in the Al-Muharraq Monastery region.
