He was a venerable scholar and a simple human being. He held many prestigious positions and received numerous awards, yet he never stumbled into pride. They described him as an encyclopedia, labeled him a polymath, addressed him as the Archdeacon, and praised him for his chastity of hand, soul, and body. He is the professor of professors, the revered scholar, and the humble, simple monk, Anba Gregorios, whom we proudly look upon as the greatest scholar our monastery has produced throughout the ages.
💙 A Holy Childhood
Edfu is a city famous for the kindness of its people and the grandeur of its history carved into its stones. To this day, people remember that King Narmer (Menes), the unifier of the Two Lands, was from its people, and we still remember that Anba Gregorios walked upon its ground, breathed its air, and drank from its water.

In a pious family, "Wahib"—meaning "lamb" in the Coptic language (
Wāhip)—was born on October 13, 1919. His father, Attallah Gerges, was a devout man who worked as a financial teller, and his mother, Tofida Abdel Messih, was deeply blessed by a vision of the Virgin Mary. Thus, it became clear that in the heart of Edfu, the light of a righteous man had emerged, his face radiating a wondrous gleam of purity, destined for a great future in both the Church and society.Years passed, and Wahib joined Edfu Primary School, becoming like a tree planted by the streams of knowledge, succeeding and bearing ripe fruits. Everyone witnessed his brilliance and loved him for his high morals, as he lived by the verse: "Blessed is the man who walks not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor stands in the path of sinners, nor sits in the seat of the scornful" (Psalm 1:1). It is remembered that during his childhood, he fell ill and missed school, prompting several teachers to visit his home to check on his health!
Wahib did not enjoy his mother's affection for long; the spring of tenderness vanished from his world, and winter arrived weeping over her passing, leaving a sword of grief to pierce his soul. Yet, this harsh trial did not deter him from the Church he loved and whose rituals he cherished. He used to collect empty shoe-polish tins to design a model of a censer (Shouria), mimicking the priest raising incense. During one liturgy, Abouna Zachariah asked him to read the Gospel. When he finished, he approached the priest, and instead of Wahib kissing the priest's hand, the priest placed his hand on Wahib's head, amid the puzzled glances of the deacons. And so it was! Wahib became a great bishop with the authority of laying hands and ordaining blessed priests!
❤️ Joining the Theological Seminary
While youth drifted like bees over flowers in search of wealth or fleeting desires, Wahib sought the torch of knowledge to hold close to his chest, illuminating his mind and setting his heart ablaze. For this reason, he spent hours among books glowing with wisdom. He entered Helwan Secondary School, where he was a classmate of President Gamal Abdel Nasser in the first year. Later, his family moved to Sohag, where he completed his studies, graduating with honors and obtaining his Baccalaureate in July 1936.

One might wonder, did this brilliant student join the Faculty of Medicine? No, he refused to fulfill his family's wish and insisted on joining the Theological Seminary to offer himself as a pleasing sacrifice before God. Traits of holiness began to be drawn upon his face, a light of faith emanated from his eyes, and his lips spoke of the wonders of God. He grew even more in grace, filled with purity, becoming a role model for the youth of his generation and a living spring from which thirsty souls drank and were refreshed.
💜 The Doctorate and Other Degrees
Wahib Attallah obtained his Bachelor of Theological Sciences with excellence in July 1939. Would he marry and serve as a parish priest? Or would he go to the monastery and live as a monk? He remained nestled in the embrace of books as a student growing in knowledge, sowing the seeds of his heart in the spiritual world and his mind in the field of knowledge. The harvest was fruitful, yielding:
- Bachelor of Arts in Philosophy from Cairo University, with a grade of Very Good in July 1944.
- Diploma in Egyptian Antiquities from the Institute of Egyptian Archaeology, with a grade of Very Good in 1951.
- Ph.D. in Arts and Coptic Studies from the University of Manchester, England, with distinction on July 7, 1955. The thesis topic was "The Greek Words in Coptic Use," supervised by the international linguistics expert, Professor Walter Till. Professor Till was astonished by Wahib Attallah's ability to prepare a dissertation that typically required ten years in just three years! He used to work eighteen hours a day and wrote five copies of his 724-page thesis until his fingers became inflamed!
After receiving his doctorate, Oxford University offered him a teaching position, but he declined. When he returned to Egypt in 1960, he was asked to serve as the director of a school in Ethiopia for a substantial monthly salary, yet he refused, even though his salary in Egypt was only 31.42 Egyptian pounds. Does this not demonstrate his asceticism regarding money and his profound love for his Church, to which he consecrated his life to serve and elevate its education?
🤎 Dr. Wahib as a Professor at the Seminary
Archdeacon Habib Girgis recognized the brilliance and seriousness of his loyal disciple, Wahib Attallah, as well as his sublime spirit and noble manners. Even before graduating, Wahib had written a critique of the weak points within the Theological Seminary in two notebooks and presented them to him. Consequently, Habib Girgis appointed him as a teaching assistant to teach Theology and Philosophy at the Theological Seminary in 1944.

Years went by, during which Wahib moved between lectures and seminars. He was subsequently appointed Vice Dean of the Theological Seminary, becoming a unique personality in mind, heart, and spirit. We became proud to have a venerable scholar who held high the heads of the descendants of Athanasius and Cyril—the masters of theology in ecumenical dialogues and scholarly forums. Wahib Attallah became the unmatched professor. Despite his vast knowledge, he loved theology and excelled in explaining it; he was a sweet fountain from which souls thirsty for God drank, allowing the tree of their lives to grow by the banks of the river of knowledge, increasing their faith and bearing the fruits sought by the spirit.
Before reaching the age of thirty, he wrote 47 academic notes in philosophy and various theological sciences. For this reason, he is considered one of the greatest figures of Christian thought, theology, and philosophy, and a prominent icon of the Theological Seminary. It is no wonder that the righteous man cheered, comforted by the rapture of joy, singing of the greatness of God and saying with the pure Saint Mary: "My soul magnifies the Lord, and my spirit has rejoiced in God my Savior" (Luke 1:46-47).
💚 Ecclesiastical Ranks and Orders
Wahib advanced in the diaconate until he attained the rank of Archdeacon. He established a ritual rite for this ecclesiastical rank, designed vestments for it, and grew his beard as the head of one of the clerical ranks in the Church. This new attire drew both supporters and opponents, exposing him to fierce attacks. Some attempted to convince Pope Cyrillos VI that this vestment would bring trouble upon the Church and that many would try to imitate it. The Pope asked him to remove the vestment, but he declined, saying: "I did not wear it except after seeking Your Holiness's permission!" The Pope then ordered him to go to Al-Muharraq Monastery.

The mind of the scholar and philosopher grew heavy with the bitterness of contemplating a future he wished to be bright. He wished to be among the flocks of doves swimming freely in space, but what could he do? When the mind stops, the work of faith begins, and prayer opens the gates of heaven, being the easiest way to reach the heart of God.
He obeyed and accepted the order with the spirituality of the saints, viewing it as a divine message to become a monk in an ancient monastery with a glorious history! And why not? He was someone who loved the serenity of nights where his soul billowed in prayer, meditation, and chanting. He often saw the elder monks in the wilderness walking slowly, asceticism bending their backs, leaning on their staffs, gazing at the ground that reminded them of mortality, and raising their eyes toward heaven where glory and splendor reside! What he had told his sister Olivia at the age of fourteen came true: "I will become a monk at Al-Muharraq Monastery," even though he had never visited a monastery before!
Dr. Wahib set off for Al-Muharraq Monastery at 3:00 AM on Saturday, September 15, 1962. He received the monastic name Pachom (
Pa'om), meaning "Eagle," on the eve of the same day, by the hands of the monastery's abbot, Hegumen Kozman Bishay El-Moharraqi. The monastic ordination was officially finalized on Sunday, September 16, 1962.In the monastery, he dedicated himself to reading and wrote a book about Al-Muharraq Monastery. When Anba Shenouda, Bishop of Education, requested him from Pope Cyrillos to serve as the Vice Dean of the Seminary, he returned to Cairo on October 25, 1962. The Pope appointed him as his personal secretary at the Papal Headquarters. He was ordained as a priest, then elevated to Hegumen (Fr. Qomas) by the hands of Anba Peter, Metropolitan of Akhmim and Saqalta, at the Ancient Church of the Virgin Mary in Al-Muharraq Monastery on June 2, 1963.
✝️ The Episcopate
God endowed Hegumen Pachom with a sober mind, pure thoughts, and a clean heart. However, thoughts crowded his mind, and the future opened its mouth, calling him with many voices. Nominations poured in for him to become the bishop of Dayrout, Monufia, Manfalut, or Qena, but he refused. Finally, Pope Cyrillos VI ordained him on May 10, 1967, as the General Bishop for Higher Theological Studies, Coptic Culture, and Scientific Research, under the name Gregorios (

The Pope came out of the sanctuary, approached him smiling, grabbed him with his left hand, held his other hand with his right, and drew him toward the altar. He tried to apologize and escape, but to no avail. The Pope shouted, saying: "It is a gift from within the altar, a gift from St. Mark, so do not refuse it!" He then placed his right hand on his forehead, saying: "Gregorios, Bishop of..."
🔬 The Scientific Method in the Life of Anba Gregorios
Anba Gregorios mastered nine languages: Ancient Egyptian (Hieroglyphic/Demotic), Coptic, Hebrew, Greek, English, French, German, Latin, and Arabic. When he visited Germany, Al-Ahram newspaper wrote about him: "An Egyptian philosopher teaching the Germans the philosophy of faith!"

He defined the objectives of the Bishopric of Scientific Research in several points:
- Reviewing, revising, and editing ecclesiastical books and manuscripts, writing them in an Arabic style corresponding strictly to the Greek and Coptic originals.
- Publishing our Coptic heritage in both Arabic and foreign languages.
- Translating our church books into living languages.
- Re-translating the books of the Early Church Fathers.
- Collecting, indexing, and re-translating ecclesiastical laws and canons from their original languages.
He published ninety books and authored eleven volumes in English. He supervised two doctoral dissertations in the theology department, participated in examining a large number of doctoral theses in public universities, and wrote numerous articles in books, encyclopedias, journals, and both Egyptian and international newspapers in Arabic, English, and Coptic.
