A luminous flame ignited by heaven in my heart has inflamed me to write about venerable scholars and teachers, whose biographies deserve to be written in letters of light, to describe to people the greatness of their love, the abundance of their virtues, the strength of their faith, and their intense labor in spreading the Word of God and defending the orthodox faith. Why should we remain silent while the breath of life is still within us?! Did not the angel say to Tobit: "It is good to keep close the secret of a king, but it is honorable to reveal and confess the works of God" (Tobit 12:7)? And our teacher Paul the Apostle said: "Remember those who rule over you, who have spoken the word of God to you, whose faith follow, considering the outcome of their conduct" (Hebrews 13:7).
They were witnesses to Christ, a light to the world, the salt of the earth... a spiritual river flowing and chanting, carrying within its depths the mystery of the Gospel. The abyss of trials failed to swallow their deeds, the fierce winds could not bring down their virtues, and the raging storm failed to scatter their sayings. Thus, they remained like a mighty oak in the wind, carrying the flame of faith, for the ray that enlightened their hearts is stronger than all the challenges they faced! For they walked on the right path and lived the teachings of Christ. Thus we learn from our fathers that no matter how well-studied a servant is, or how capable a preacher, or how skilled a writer... he will not affect his listeners unless the Spirit of God works in him, for the Lord Christ said: "The words that I speak to you are spirit, and they are life" (John 6:63).
They lived in the unity of "the faith which was once for all delivered to the saints" (Jude 1:3). They did not adorn the rings of false dogmas with the diamond of the sound Orthodox doctrine, nor did they mix the tares with the purity of the wheat grains that become the body of Christ in the Eucharist. They did not blend the words of revelation with human doctrines based on the power of logic and the splendor of philosophy, which failed to find a solution to the problem of the fall of man. Rather, it was established on the power of the miracle, and the life of Christ, His deeds, and His teachings are the miracle of miracles. When we emulate the faith of our fathers, we join ourselves as new branches to the tree of faith, and we board the Church sailing toward the Kingdom of God.
When they preached, they knew the nature of the threads from which the Creator made the garment of our lives. They addressed both the simple and the educated, the city dwellers and the rural folk, penetrating the depths of hearts with their teachings. Their words carried a spiritual power that transformed souls, and their words mingled with the sayings of God, so the wicked trembled and the righteous were comforted.
They shed abundant tears in prayer, which turned into shining stars illuminating the path of sinners! Thus, the pains of service turned into a womb overflowing with life! How immense was their joy at the return of the prodigal son to his father's arms, and when a heretic left his error to walk on the right path and soar in the sky of the spirit with the flock of believers.
We knew them as generous, ever-giving treasures, and as melodious tunes playing the melody of loyalty. Therefore, hurricanes cannot erase their footprints, nor can the years fold them away, because their writings are engraved in our minds, their teachings are cited in our dialogues, and their sayings are repeated in our sermons. It is enough pride for us that a great professor from the Al-Muharraq Theological Seminary added a new subject that had not been taught in the seminary before, which is: the Geography of the Holy Bible, and wrote important notes on the Old Testament; another professor published research in dogma that enriched our Coptic library; and a third interpreted books of the Holy Bible that became important references for us.
Some of them mastered several languages, such as Hebrew, Coptic, Amharic, English, and French... and there were those who composed poetry, wrote plays, and composed deep, spiritual Orthodox hymns... They did not stop at the service of the altar, but rather established Christian societies, preached and interpreted the Holy Bible in them, and through them offered services to widows and orphans.
When they entered into doctrinal dialogues, the words in the mouths of the opposers turned into broken utterances, and their thoughts froze as they tried to reply, until in the end, they fell into helpless silence! For this reason, we attribute to our fathers the credit for resisting those who "secretly bring in destructive heresies" (2 Peter 2:1), about whom the Apostle Paul prophesied, saying: "For I know this, that after my departure savage wolves will come in among you, not sparing the flock. Also from among yourselves men will rise up, speaking perverse things, to draw away the disciples after themselves" (Acts 20:29-30). When we follow their teachings, we act according to the Lord’s saying to the bride of the Song of Solomon: "If you do not know, O fairest among women, follow the footprints of the flock, and feed your little goats beside the shepherds’ tents" (Song of Solomon 1:8).
When we speak of their struggles, we remember a monk who died a martyr for the name of Christ, a bishop who was unjustly imprisoned and thus resembled the Apostle Paul, a Hegumen who suffered for several years from cancer yet thanked God and became a source of consolation for the sick and the weary, a venerable scholar who lived in austerity but did not grumble, persevering in raising and educating his children, a capable cantor who lost his sight but struggled, learned, and became a bright light for both the blind and the seeing, and a Hegumen whose wife passed away at an early age, so he lived the rest of his life as a widower, serving himself and his people with honesty and devotion... Do not these fragrant biographies deserve to be emulated and followed? Does not the saying of the Lord apply to these righteous people: "Those who are wise shall shine like the brightness of the firmament, and those who turn many to righteousness like the stars forever and ever" (Daniel 12:3)? And how could they not shine when the features of the Lord Jesus were reflected on their faces, just as the rays of the stars are reflected on the surface of clear water?
In truth, when our teacher Paul the Apostle said: "Remember those who rule over you, who have spoken the word of God to you, whose faith follow, considering the outcome of their conduct" (Hebrews 13:7), he placed before us three verbs in the imperative form: Remember, Consider (Look), and Follow (Emulate). Remember indicates that the guides are present in our consciousness and our prayers, and therefore we remember them every day in the Synaxarium/Assembly of the Liturgy, saying: "For this, O Lord, is the command of Your only-begotten Son, that we share in the memorial of Your saints." Consider teaches us to look at the end of their lives, not the beginning, to see the complete work of God in their lives and glorify Him. Follow (Emulate) means to emulate their faith, not their changing behavior; for faith generates virtues, and divine grace is one, but behavior varies. Therefore, we see one saint who remains silent and another who speaks, a saint who stays away from people and another who serves them... May God grant us to emulate them and follow in their footsteps out of the barren wilderness of the world, to arrive safely at the joyful horizons of eternity.
