He married and then embraced monasticism. He lived in the El-Muharraq Monastery, served in Sudan, preached, and wrote. He lived a life full of events and exciting stances, all of which testify to the depth of his faith, piety, and vast knowledge. He is the venerable scholar, Hegumen Youhanna Salama El-Muharraqi, author of the book "The Precious Pearls in Explaining the Rituals and Beliefs of the Church" (Al-La’ali’ al-Nafisa fi Sharh Tuquos wa Mo’taqadat al-Kanisa), whom many do not know was a monk at the thriving El-Muharraq Monastery.
A Priestly Family
Girga is a simple village whose name has been associated with saints and scholars. Among them, we mention its great saint, Bishop Anba Yousab El-Abah, and Mother Irini, the abbess of the Convent of Abu Seifein (St. Philopater Mercurius) for Nuns, whose fragrance of virtues spread far and wide. We also mention Hegumen Youhanna Salama, who was born on the feast of the great martyr Abu Seifein (August 1, 1878 AD). His birthday was a joyful event that elevated the village's status and spread its name in many places. When they consulted on naming him, they found nothing better than "Seif" (meaning Sword) seeking the blessing of Abu Seifein. Indeed, he became a sharp sword drawn against the minds of those deviating from the teachings of Jesus Christ!
Seif grew up in a priestly family; his father and four brothers were blessed priests, and his mother was a pious homemaker. Thus, he was nurtured on spiritual teachings and church rituals since his childhood and learned the meaning of family prayer. Consequently, the traits of saints began to reflect on his face and appear in his words.
Studying at the Theological Seminary
Seif obtained his primary education certificate from Girga School in 1892 AD, and then joined the Theological Seminary in 1893 AD. Among his classmates was the pioneer of Sunday Schools, Archdeacon Habib Girgis, who spoke of his zeal and activity when he was a student, saying: "I consider it one of my holiest duties to mention here my school classmates, who were burning with zeal and sincerity, and who used to deliver sermons with us in the school's grand hall. They are: Geid Effendi Shenouda, Rizk Effendi Hanna, Seif Effendi Salama, Ishaq Effendi Girgis, and Habib Effendi Shenouda."
After five years, he obtained his seminary diploma in 1898 AD. He was then appointed as a teacher at the Monks' Theological School in El-Muharraq Monastery, which was founded by the abbot of the monastery, His Grace Anba Pachomius I (1896–1928 AD), to educate monks in ecclesiastical sciences.
A Short Marriage and Permanent Consecration
A few years passed after Seif graduated and received his seminary diploma, after which he got married. It seems that his father hoped he would become a priest like him. However, his wife passed away (reposed) after a short period. He refused to marry another and decided to consecrate his life to the One who loved him and overwhelmed him with the light of His love. He used to travel through the villages and towns of Girga and Assiut, preaching to the people and teaching them the truths of the Orthodox Christian faith. God granted him spiritual words with luminous letters that were like fire, igniting the hearts of those who heard them. His voice was like fresh water falling on dry land, irrigating it so that it brought forth good fruits.
Monasticism in El-Muharraq Monastery
Seif's soul longed for the monastic life, so he went to the thriving Paromeos Monastery in the Wilderness of Scetis (Wadi El-Natrun). However, his father refused to let him leave. Later, when he became a teacher at the Monks' School in El-Muharraq Monastery, he spoke with the monastery's abbot about the longings of his heart and his love for monasticism. The abbot rejoiced at this, and three bishops participated in his ordination: Anba Pachomius, Abbot of El-Muharraq Monastery; Anba Mark, Metropolitan of Esna, Luxor, and Aswan; and Anba Theophilus, Metropolitan of Manfalut and Abnoub. His blessed ordination took place on the eve of the Feast of the Holy Epiphany (January 19, 1905 AD), and he was named Youhanna Salama El-Muharraqi, after Saint John the Baptist.
In the monastery, the novice monk dedicated himself to study, growing in knowledge and humility, and adorning himself with monastic virtues, as he loved silence and tranquility. The abbot loved him and ordained him as a priest, appointing him as the principal of the Monks' School in the monastery. Many monks studied under him, drinking from his knowledge, virtues, and wisdom; some of them later became bishops and priests. He continued for thirteen years as a teacher and director of the school and was elevated to the rank of Hegumen ( القمص ).
The Book of "The Precious Pearls"
At the beginning of the nineteenth century, foreign missions began arriving in Egypt and infiltrating the Coptic people. They were spreading teachings foreign to the faith and spirit of our Coptic Orthodox Church, using books sold at low prices to achieve their goals. They also built schools and hospitals. Hegumen Youhanna Salama felt a holy jealousy for his Church. Realizing the danger threatening the Coptic Church, he dove deep into books and manuscripts, researching and digging to build a fortress-like foundation that would not be swept away by the torrents of heresies and foreign ideas.
After a monumental effort that lasted for years, he wrote his great book, vibrant with the spirit of the Orthodox Church, its dogmas, and its faith: "The Precious Pearls in Explaining the Rituals and Beliefs of the Church." It remains a major reference for scholars to this day. When he presented this study to His Holiness Pope Cyrillos V, the Pope rejoiced greatly and ordered the book to be printed and taught to the students of the Theological College and Coptic schools. The first edition of the book sold out immediately upon its release, so it was decided to print it again. Thus, the star of Hegumen Youhanna Salama shone brightly in the sky of the Church, and he received honor and praise wherever he went for preserving the orthodoxy of the word and dogma.
Service in Sudan
In early January 1918 AD, His Holiness Pope Cyrillos V issued a decree appointing Hegumen Youhanna Salama as the Patriarchal Vicar in Sudan. He spent thirty years serving and preaching faithfully. There, he founded the Coptic College in Khartoum in 1922 AD to counter the teachings of foreign missions that had spread in Sudan at that time, and he taught religious sciences and the Coptic language there until 1942 AD.
Under his leadership, the Coptic College in Khartoum reached a very high standard, and its activities expanded to include kindergartens, primary, secondary, and commercial education for both boys and girls. He also established a women's society and abolished the custom of women walking behind funeral processions and banning them from slapping their faces, wailing, and lamenting over the dead. He limited the condolence period to three days and ordered grieving women to approach the Holy Sacraments for Holy Communion, after they used to boycott the houses of God and stop going to pray in churches!
He also founded Sunday Schools in Port Sudan, where he laid the foundation for a massive church after it had been just a wooden room. He rebuilt the church in Halfa and established the church in Atbara.
Furthermore, he built the Metropolitan Headquarters, which was visited by Emperor Haile Selassie, who was a great admirer of Hegumen Youhanna Salama. The Emperor praised him for his great deeds and the schools he founded, and took a commemorative photo with him, which is still preserved at the Metropolitan Headquarters to this day.
Prince Omar Toussoun was also one of his admirers and praised him in his book published about Sudan.
Like all reformers who refuse to beg for their projects, Hegumen Youhanna Salama succeeded in purchasing fourteen houses to be an endowment (waqf) in the name of the Coptic Church in Sudan.
Establishing Schools and Dedicating to Education
When the Egyptian mission went to Sudan on March 11, 1935 AD, led by Talaat Harb Pasha, the founder of Banque Misr, it praised the achievements of Hegumen Youhanna Salama. The schools he established were sufficient to meet the needs of Egyptians. Abdullah Hussein, the lawyer, wrote in his book about Sudan: "In Khartoum, there is a Coptic Charitable Society headed by the reverend father, Hegumen Youhanna Salama, the Patriarchal Vicar and pastor of the Orthodox Church. It runs charitable schools—kindergarten, primary for boys, primary for girls, secondary, and a commercial division. About 40% of the students study for free. It accommodates hundreds of students and constitutes the only formal schools in Sudan that follow the system of the Ministry of Education, achieving 100% success rates. The children of Egyptians in Sudan attend them because Sudan's schools and jobs are for Sudanese. Thus, these schools met the needs of Egyptians and stand as a symbol of Egyptian nationalism."
Fouad Abaza Pasha also stated: "The schools won the trust of the Egyptian authorities." When Hegumen Youhanna Salama came to Egypt, Fouad Abaza honored him amidst a large gathering of Egyptian figures.
In 1940 AD, a high-level Egyptian delegation visited Sudan, headed by Mr. Ali Maher, the Prime Minister. When he met Hegumen Youhanna Salama, he thanked him for his great works and services. High-profile foreign and Egyptian personalities who visited Sudan praised his activity. One of them told him: "You have accomplished a task that the Ministry failed to do by establishing Egyptian schools in Sudan. Therefore, we consider you Egypt's ambassador to Sudan!" Mr. Christoidis, the head of the Greek community in Sudan, said of him: "If we had Father Youhanna, we would have built a statue for him!"
Nomination for the Patriarchate
When Hegumen Youhanna Salama served in Sudan, and his service bore fruit, showing his scholarly and administrative capabilities along with his wisdom in managing church affairs, some young people sought to nominate him to be a General Bishop. However, he strongly refused and remained a Hegumen. After the departure of Pope Cyrillos V, some prominent Copts nominated him for the Patriarchate. However, Anba Yoannes, Metropolitan of Beheira and Monufia and the Locum Tenens at the time, succeeded and was ordained as Pope Yoannes XIX (December 16, 1928 – June 21, 1942 AD).
His Repose
Hegumen Youhanna Salama lived as a simple scholar, loved by everyone who dealt with him. He was an honorable image of our Coptic Church; he preached, taught, wrote, established churches and schools, and provided countless services to the people of Sudan. He became a living epistle vibrating with love and giving, rebuking those who were lazy in fulfilling their mission toward their people. Finally, after a long journey summarized in two words: Service and Giving, our venerable scholar reposed in the Lord on April 13, 1960 AD. He was buried in Sudan, becoming a shining star in the sky of the saints.
