 Hegumen Mankarios El-Moharraqi
The Church was everything in his life, both before and after his monasticism. It was the house where he found his rest, prayed, chanted, and breathed the scent of incense. In the monastery, he taught us through his actions much more than his words! One can only imagine the comfort a monastic candidate feels upon entering the monastery and seeing an old, frail monk heading to the church—walking slowly, leaning on his staff, and gazing down at the ground that reminds him of mortality. This was Hegumen Mankarios, who lived for nearly seventy years as a monk, and whose image remains etched in our minds, while his simple words still echo in our ears.
A Priestly Family and the Birth of a Monk
In the village of Deir El-Naghameesh in Sohag Governorate, Father Botros, the son of Hegumen Mikhail and priest of the Church of the Virgin Mary, lived as a righteous and venerable shepherd, watchfully guarding his flock from thieves and ravenous wolves. However, there was another flock he had to nurture and lead to green pastures: his nine children, whom he begot with his virtuous wife, Kheira. The third among them was Methuselah, born in 1902, whose name means "man of the weapon" or "spear." Methuselah later witnessed that his grandfather, Hegumen Mikhail, was a saint, and his father was a firm man. From this ancient and noble priestly family came His Holiness Pope Yousab II and Anba Makarios, Bishop of Qena.
As the years passed, Methuselah learned reading, writing, and the Coptic language in the village Kuttab (traditional school). He memorized the Praise (Tasbeha), the Psalms, and portions of the Holy Bible. He read extensively about the lives of martyrs, saints, and the desert fathers, embodying the words of Saint Paul the Apostle: "For if the root is holy, so are the branches" (Romans 11:16). His mother was a virtuous lady whom he deeply loved and was attached to, and his father was a man filled with faith.
The Call to Monasticism
As Methuselah grew in age, he advanced in spiritual stature and became highly active in service. He took charge of cleaning the church, baking the holy Oblation (Qorban), and teaching the deacons the liturgical tunes and responses. Yet, the desire for the priesthood did not possess him, nor was marriage his ambition. He viewed life through the eyes of a monk; he tasted the sweetness of the daily Liturgy and unceasing prayer, and lived in voluntary poverty, yearning to join the ranks of the monastics. Loving the tranquility of the night, he once recounted about himself: "I used to love the harvest season. I would go to guard the threshing floors and stay up late at night with the young men, talking about the wonders of God, reading the Holy Scriptures, and meditating on the lives of saints and monks... until the sunbeams broke through and morning arrived. We would eat and return to our homes filled with joy."
Obstacles Along the Way
Methuselah’s mind grew heavy from constantly thinking about monasticism; he was searching for a life he had long desired. However, his father wanted him to serve in the local church and remain by his side in the world to manage his lands and livestock, especially after six of his children had passed away! Realizing this, Methuselah went to spend a retreat at the Monastery of Saint Anthony, hoping to settle there, but a month later, his eldest brother, Mikhail, brought him back home! Yet, he looked up at the sky and found it bright with stars, and looked at the earth and saw it adorned with flowers; thus, he maintained his vital inner strength for the struggle between living in the world and going to the monastery.
The greatest conflict was with his father, who became certain that his son had chosen celibacy as a crown to adorn his head. His father tried to dissuade him from monasticism by offering him marriage and the priesthood, but Methuselah refused. He openly confessed his love for the monastic life, interceding through the Virgin Mary, whom he deeply loved, and requested to become a monk in a monastery bearing her name. God answered his prayer, and this is what happened:
One day, Father Botros was taking a midday nap. Suddenly, he woke up and called for his son. When Methuselah arrived, his father asked him to go to the monastery because he belonged to the Virgin Mary, causing all those present to weep! When his wife asked him what had happened, he said: "While I was asleep, I saw a radiant light out of which came a maiden surrounded by a halo of light. She asked me to let Methuselah go to the monastery because he belongs to her portion!" And so it was, and Methuselah set off to the monastery.
Monasticism in El-Moharraq Monastery
"Do not judge your future from your present; for prophets tended sheep before they led nations." This meaningful phrase opens a gate of hope for anyone who stumbles along the way. Despite his prior pains, Methuselah never despaired. The year 1927 arrived, bearing tidings of great joy. Methuselah spread his hands like a beautiful bird seeking to settle in a long-awaited nest; he went to El-Moharraq Monastery and met Hegumen Daniel El-Moharraqi. The Hegumen rejoiced to learn that he came from a venerable priestly lineage and possessed a deep love for God and monasticism. He took him to the monastery's deputy, who assigned him to serve in the livestock farm.
When midnight arrived and the awe of silence settled, the church doors opened, and the monks hurried from their cells for prayer. Methuselah stood among them, his face filled with grace. The monks bore witness to his love, simplicity, obedience, diligence, and humility, and thus nominated him for monasticism. He was ordained by Anba Pachomius I, Abbot of the monastery, on the Paramon of the Glorious Nativity (January 6, 1928). After the Liturgy, the monks stood exchanging joyful glances, looking at the novice monk, Mankarios, congratulating him on his monasticism and asking the Lord to grant him fullness of grace and spiritual stature, alongside his companion in ordination, Monk Tawadros Ibrahim El-Moharraqi. The name Mankarios means "man of God."
A Day in the Life of Monk Mankarios
Father Mankarios saw in Jesus a love as deep as the sea, so he lived drawing from this pure spring and overflowing it upon his fellow monks. His love was manifested in his daily routine, which he described saying: "I used to wake up at eleven o'clock at night to pray the Psalms. After that, I would knock on the cells of the monks to urge them to attend the Praise (Tasbeha) and check on their health. Then, I would ring the bell to begin the Midnight Prayer, after which I would head to the bakery (Bethlehem) to bake the Oblation (Qorban) and bring it to the church until the Liturgy ended. Afterwards, I would go to the blind Father Bishay to prepare his breakfast and attend to his needs, along with the requests of other elderly monks. I would continue this way until sunset, when I would go to ring the bell. After praying the Psalms, I would return to the bakery to knead and prepare the Oblation for the next day. Following that, I would enter my cell exhausted to pray my Psalms and sleep for a few hours... I used to get tired, but the Lord gave me strength and grace, and today I live by the blessing of those days." Among the many duties he took upon himself were cleaning the church and preparing it for prayer, serving the elderly, making candles, preparing the sacramental wine (Abarba), working in the bakery, serving in the baptistery, and managing the livestock yard.
Priesthood and the Rank of Hegumen
Years passed, and Father Mankarios ascended to the sanctuary to offer sacrifices and lift up incense to God. He was ordained a priest in 1932, and elevated to the rank of Hegumen (Qoms) in 1933 by the hands of His Grace Anba Agapius the Great, Bishop of Sanabo, Dayrout, and Qosqam (1929–1964). From that time onward, Hegumen Mankarios never left the service of the altar of the ancient church that he loved so dearly. Truly, a priest whom God has gathered into the grip of divine love, spending his days in prayer, praise, and altar service, is a living sermon and a role model for the monks.
Monks usually went to the Coptic Monastic Theological School in Helwan to study. Father Mankarios went there in 1929, but did not complete his studies, returning after a year due to his longing for life inside the monastery. He went a second time (1947–1952) and did not return to the monastery until he held his graduation certificate.
Radiant Milestones in the Life of Hegumen Mankarios
The goal was crystal clear before our righteous father, which is why he rejected a divided life between monasticism and external service. When he was offered the opportunity to serve in Jerusalem and Sudan, he refused without any hesitation.
He was distinguished by the immense kindness of his heart. One day, I went to him to confess, and I felt a tenderness I had never experienced before. I realized the wisdom of the early fathers when they emphasized the necessity of confessing to the elders; confession is not merely advice, information, or spiritual exercises... it is a life. If the confession father does not love God and live monasticism in its pure simplicity, he cannot benefit the monks! As for his unique love for the church, it was a phenomenon frequently spoken of by the brethren.
He used to perform numerous prostrations (Metanias), and sometimes he prayed the Agpeya (Book of Hours) three times a day. If a monk asked him for the reason, he would say: "What else do I have to do!" He also read the Holy Bible with great passion, and one of his sayings was: "The Holy Bible has no fixed schedule; as long as the monk is in his cell, he must read it!"
Regarding his love for giving, he would go to the monastery's butcher, take his portion of meat, and go back to his cell to cut it equally for a number of workers he cared for. Thus, he taught us that "faith without works is dead also" (James 2:26)! He was subjected to criticism because of his actions, but he believed that the words of people are like rocks: either you carry them on your back and it breaks, or you build a tower with them under your feet to rise and triumph! Our father rose high, and now he is blessed both in heaven and on earth!
He was adorned with humility and simplicity, whether in his garments, his food, his speech, or his cell. Inside the church, he was once looking for his shoes, so I took them and tried to place them under his feet for him to wear, but he grew angry and his face changed in refusal!
On another occasion, Anba Mina, Metropolitan of Girga, visited him in his cell to confess. At the end of the session, the Metropolitan bowed and asked for his blessing, but our father firmly refused, saying: "Your Grace, you are a Metropolitan, and I am a poor monk!" But the Metropolitan insisted on receiving absolution from him. Immediately, Hegumen Mankarios said: "Absolve me, Your Grace," and prayed for him!
Despite his abundant prayers and fasts, he used to say: "Sixty years I have lived, yet I have not pleased the Lord for a single day as a monk!" He faced intense demonic warfare; in the beginning, he feared and trembled, but he would cry out to God, signing himself with the sign of the cross and reciting the Psalms, seeking the intercession of the Virgin Mary and the martyr Saint Filotheos.
He blessed my cell, and when I asked him, "Are you afraid of death?" he shouted, "Why... why should I fear death?!" as if death were merely an insect he could trample under his feet!
Spiritual Encounters in His Life
  • In the spring of 1977, he fell into a severe coma that lasted for three days, and doctors expected his death within a single day. Suddenly, our father stood up, holding his Agpeya and the cross, and began to pray.
  • In the Coptic month of Kiahk in 1982, Hegumen Mankarios fell to the ground and suffered a fractured hip joint. When the doctor examined him, he said: "Go to the monastery and pray for him, for the condition is critical, and given his advanced age, surgery poses a grave danger." Within two days, he stood up, and the doctor returned and confessed that what happened to him was a true miracle!
  • In 1991, while he was bathing, the water became electrified! He fell to the ground, and when he stood up, the electricity shocked him again, but suddenly the power cut off entirely!
  • In 1995, he suffered from acute heart failure, and his body became severely swollen. Doctors predicted his death within two days, but the following day, the doctor was astonished to find our father in excellent health!
  • At St. Maria Hospital in Assiut, Hegumen Mankarios opened his eyes after spending four days in a coma. Finding people in his room, he pointed to a candy box, which they brought to him. He gave everyone a piece of Turkish delight (Malban), except for a lady.
