(Mixahl )

My pen trembles as I write about the great Saint Michael El-Beheiry, because his life is so widely renowned; what new insights could I possibly offer? I will not merely present information, but rather express my deep longings. Readers will feel love surging between my words. Indeed, tender words emerging from my heart are far better, for they ignite the emotions of readers and guide them into spiritual meditations that can transform their lives.
Ashnin El-Nasara and the Birth of a Saint
Ashnin El-Nasara is a beautiful town in Maghagha District, Minya Governorate. Its beauty multiplied and its fame spread due to that joyous event which elevated its status, when God placed a human angel into the hands of life in the year 1847. This was Michael, who was born to pious parents and grew up in a faithful family that enlightened his mind and cast the seeds of faith into his heart. He lived his childhood like a beautiful bird among lush branches, tasting the sweetness of virtue in a family where human souls dissolved in love for their Creator, becoming a symbol of sincerity in worship and a loving attachment to God. They bent their knees to glorify their Creator, and poured out their prayers as an acceptable sacrifice before Him!
Michael grew in grace because "if the root is holy, so are the branches" (Romans 11:16). How beautiful was the sight of the child sitting on the banks of flowing waters, meditating on Bible stories, praying, chanting a Psalm, or reading the biography of a saint by candlelight? The brilliance of faith sparkled in his eyes, and joy filled his heart, overflowing unto his senses.
Yet, the fragrance of spring does not last; autumn arrived harshly, seeking to shed the tree leaves, scatter them in the wind, and shroud the flowers with them. The tender boy, now twelve years old, saw his father weak and bedridden. His father gazed at a dim lamp struggling against the darkness, yet the darkness overcame it. He had lived watching Michael, his small, beautiful bird, wishing to see him grow; now, he was spreading his wings to fly, swimming through the expanse of death. He was passing away, unable to rejoice in his son’s marriage or witness the baptism of his children.
Those were cruel moments, during which family and relatives realized that spring was departing from their world. Michael’s life became caught between a bitter winter that drenched him with its rains, a summer that scorched his bones with its heat, and an autumn that shook the dwelling of his life with its winds! What did they do? They took the boy to a neighboring house and brought him up to the rooftop, so he would not see the tears or hear the sounds of wailing and weeping.
However, God willed to manifest Michael’s holiness since his youth. In a spiritual vision, he saw angels carrying his father. When he cried out: "My father! My father!" an angel answered him: "Ask that your end may be like the end of your father [1]!" Then they vanished from his sight, and he lived as a fatherless orphan.
Three years after his father's passing, sorrow visited him anew; his mother, who had nurtured him like a gardener watching over a vibrant rose, passed away. When the rose bloomed, she could not inhale its fragrance, for death came like a tempestuous wind that uprooted her from the soil of life! The child Michael thus experienced the words of the Prophet David: "When my father and my mother forsake me, then the Lord will take me up" (Psalm 27:10).
His Companionship with Wild Beasts
"When a man's ways please the Lord, He makes even his enemies to be at peace with him" (Proverbs 16:7). This wisdom illuminates what happened to Michael at the age of fifteen. He had gone with his companions to work on the construction of roads and bridges, and during his return at night, two hyenas appeared. His companion was terrified; his heart raced, and speech froze on his lips from the horror of the sight! He drew closer to Michael, clinging to his faith and taking refuge in his holiness. Michael reassured him in a voice where simplicity rippled through his words, saying: "Do not fear, they are just two gentle dogs [1]!" for he had never seen hyenas before!
Moments passed like an eternity, during which Michael's companion breathed heavily, gasping as if facing death. Yet, he was astonished to see the saintly Michael playing with them! As they neared the village, the local dogs caught the scent of the two hyenas and began to bark fiercely, which disturbed the villagers. Thinking that thieves were approaching to rob them, the villagers rushed out of their homes carrying their weapons, only to be stunned by this sight, and they glorified God!
The Visit of Hegumen Tawadros El-Moharraqi
Michael lived pouring the longings of his heart upon the altar of prayer, asking God to accept his life as a living and acceptable offering, and so it was! One spring day, filled with the fragrance of roses, the monk Hegumen Tawadros El-Moharraqi visited the town of Ashnin El-Nasara during his annual custom. Michael had reached the age of twenty. The young man sat with the Hegumen, hearing much from him about monasticism and monks, and openly confessed his love for the monastic life and his desire to end his inner struggle. This spiritual meeting was the first chapter in the story of his life—the monastic life he longed for and desired above all else in the world.
Michael went to Father Yoannis, the son of Hegumen Gabriel, his confession father. The priest looked into his eyes, wishing to see the secrets the future held. When he granted him permission to go to the monastery, Michael's spirit rejoiced, and he felt a wondrous emotion infused into his heart by heaven. He bowed his head with the humility of saints and, in a voice as tender as the melody of a flute, requested prayers and accompanied Hegumen Tawadros to El-Moharraq Monastery.
On the Road to the Monastery
Michael departed from Ashnin El-Nasara, walking the long path toward Mount Qosqam as if beholding life for the very first time. He walked through the fields, gazing at the basils swaying as if chanting the Psalms of David. The flowers opened their beautiful, joyous mouths: red like rubies, blue like emeralds, and yellow like gold. He sought the beauty of the light and was enlightened by it; he recognized the path of eternity and hastened toward it. He looked toward heaven and ascended the mountain of the Spirit.
The two walked in a procession without carriages, accompanied not by armies, but by the spirits of angels hovering here and there to guard and comfort them along the way. Hegumen Tawadros entered El-Moharraq Monastery, accompanied by his righteous son, to present the monks with a priceless, precious gem.
Michael as a Monk in El-Moharraq Monastery
In the monastery, Michael sat with the elders, inquiring about the meanings of verses in the Holy Bible, and read extensively from the biographies of the saints. The elders entrusted Michael, the novice monastic candidate, to an experienced spiritual elder and a righteous role model: Hegumen Salib Al-Alwani El-Moharraqi, through whom he learned how to walk wisely on the path of the ascetics.
A year and a half passed while Michael remained diligent in prayer, serving the monastery fathers with love and obedience, so they nominated him for ordination. He was ordained a monk keeping his own name: Michael (meaning: Who is like God?). He was called "El-Beheiry" because his family's title was "Al-Baharwa," or to distinguish him from another monk in the monastery named Michael El-Sa'eedi. This blessed ordination was performed by the hands of Hegumen Paul El-Delgawy El-Moharraqi, the Abbot of El-Moharraq Monastery (1866–1870).
Michael expressed the feelings that overflowed within his soul and the thoughts that possessed him after his monastic ordination, saying: "I felt that I was born anew, while realizing the gravity of my position. Monasticism is a responsibility through which I vowed a vow before the holy altar to serve the Lord all the days of my life; and then, I was filled with joy [1]."
Priesthood and the Rank of Hegumen
In January 1875, amidst the morning breezes, the bell rang with tunes of joy, and the monks hurried to the church to participate in this great event. The faithful monk stood contrite, and with the humility of saints, he bowed his head under the hand of Anba Athanasius, Bishop of Sanabo, Dayrout, and Qosqam. Hearts were filled with joy, and tongues broke forth in congratulations, for Michael became a priest filled with the fruits of the Spirit—purity, love, and knowledge. The ordination increased his growth in prayer, asceticism, and reading. He worked in binding and restoring manuscripts, and cleaning the monastery churches. Thus, the monks loved him, and he was elevated to the rank of Hegumen (Qoms) by the hands of Anba Pachomius, Abbot of the monastery (1896–1928).
The Harsh Trial
The number of monks in El-Moharraq Monastery increased during the presidency of Hegumen Paul El-Delgawy. Then, the hellish serpent of trials emerged, casting its venom into the fragrance of roses! The demons of hell gathered, wishing to consume everything the field had sprouted! Satan succeeded in sowing discord among a small group of monks, who rebelled against Hegumen Paul El-Delgawy (later Saint Anba Abraam), and he was removed from the presidency of the monastery. He departed with four monks to the Paromeos Monastery.
However, when Saint Michael asked to leave with him, Hegumen Paul El-Delgawy refused and prophesied that Michael would be a blessing to the monastery and the monks, and so it was! Yet, he suffered greatly after the departure of his teacher and spiritual father; nevertheless, all the trials he endured and the pressures he bore would vanish upon the altar of prayer! For when a saint prays, his fiery words ignite the demons, and the resonance of his voice drives away evil spirits.
Defense of a Monk and a Great Miracle
His Grace Anba Gregorius recounted this story to one of the monastery fathers, saying:
Saint Michael heard of a dispute between a monk and the Abbot of the monastery. He went to the Abbot to intercede and ask for his forbearance, seeking to preserve the peace of the monastery and the comfort of the novice monk. However, the Abbot rebuked him and did not grant his request! When the time for the Midnight Prayer arrived, the monk assigned to ring the bell went to open the door of the ancient church, but it would not open! He informed the Abbot, who was to preside over the prayer and offer the sacrifice, of what had happened.

Immediately, the Abbot went to Hegumen Michael El-Beheiry to apologize to him. When the humble saint saw the Abbot approaching him, he bowed before him to ask for absolution. However, the Abbot would not allow Father Michael to make a prostration (Metania) to him; instead, he bent down, took his hands, and asked him for absolution for what he had done. The Abbot and Hegumen Michael then went to the church together; the doors opened, and the monks prayed and glorified God!
Virtues and Miracles
Saint Michael El-Beheiry was a man of prayer, abundant in fasting, a lover of giving, extensively well-read, a virtuous teacher, venerable, humble in heart, a wise monk, and a man of miracles. Many received the grace of healing through his hands, and people came to him from all regions to receive his blessing. He was distinguished by his love for silence and solitude; he spent the night praising God, sleeping only a little, and met the temptations of devils with steadfastness, fighting them with fasting and prayer.
God granted him authority over wild beasts, evil spirits, sorcerers, and magicians. A sorcerer from the village of Bani Rafe' in Manfalut District had deceived many. One day, people came to the sorcerer asking him to send an evil spirit to the cell of Hegumen Michael to find out who was sitting with him. Those present were astonished when they heard the spirit returning in terror, saying: "Ask another request of me, for I cannot enter the cell of this monk, because it is surrounded by a wall of fire [1]!" Among the listeners was a young man...
