There is nothing that stirs the emotions and convicts the conscience more than the stories of the saints who lived a life of austerity yet never ceased to give. Anba Serapion sold his Gospel and his clothes to distribute their price to the poor! When they asked him, "Where is your book?" he replied, "It was urging me every day, saying: 'Sell all that you have and distribute to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, follow Me' (Luke 18:22), so I followed the word of the Gospel." Anba Abraam carved a long path among the poor to do good for them, earning him the title "The Friend of the Poor."
💙 Birth and Early Upbringing
In an old rural house in the village of Delga, Deir Mawas district, Minya Governorate, the sound of footsteps was heard, and its hallways witnessed bustling movements. The child "Paulos" (meaning: the small) was born, and this great event took place in the year 1829.
Days passed, and the family, relatives, and neighbors gathered in Gabriel’s house to celebrate the baptism of his son. The dawn of spring spread a pure garment over his body, and the flowers opened their petals smiling at this joyful event. His childhood testifies that his family was deeply pious; thus, they educated him in the village’s traditional school (Kuttab), where he memorized Psalms, hymns, and many verses from the Holy Bible under Muallim Raphael. When he was ordained as a deacon by the hands of Anba Yousab, Bishop of Koskam and Sanabo, he looked like an angel clothed by heaven in garments of purity.

💔 The Departure of His Mother
Years passed since the birth of Paulos, and a strong sense of joy filled the house. The child was calm and simple, growing in spiritual stature. From his pure eyes radiated the gleam of faith, and his mouth spoke of the wonders of God. Holy verses, Psalms, hymns, and the lives of the saints flowed from his lips, falling upon the hearts of his listeners like dew drops upon the crowns of flowers, filling them with vitality.
However, the fragrance of spring does not last. Winter arrived, filling the house with tears of grief; his mother departed to Paradise when he was only eight years old, leaving him deprived of maternal tenderness. From his youth, Paulos experienced the words of the Prophet Isaiah: "For a mere moment I have forsaken you, but with great mercies I will gather you" (Isaiah 54:7).

❤️ Monasticism at Al-Muharraq Monastery
Paulos lived tasting the sweetness of serenity when God extends His hands over the heart and fills it with the light of His love. He experienced the peace of pure thoughts when they pass like a flock of doves, and knew the meaning of joy when it surges within the soul. He yearned for the angelic life and set off to Al-Muharraq Monastery at the age of nineteen.
In the monastery, he kept his eyes fixed upon heaven, indifferent to all earthly matters. The monks loved him for his piety and nominated him for monasticism. He was tonsured under the name Monk Paulos El-Delgawy El-Moharraqi—as it was custom in the past to attribute the monk's father's name, village, and monastery to him upon ordination. This joyful event took place in 1848 during the presidency of Hegumen Abdel Malak El-Hory over Al-Muharraq Monastery.

💜 Service in Minya
Years passed since Paulos was ordained a monk, during which he lived between prayer and labor, serving as an exemplar of love and obedience. He cherished the voluntary poverty he vowed on his ordination day. His sweet biography spread, and his virtues resonated among the monks until Anba Jacobus, Metropolitan of Minya, heard of him. He requested him to serve as the vicar of the metropolitanate, and Paulos obediently complied. Consequently, the headquarters became a refuge for the poor and orphans, and a dwelling for the sick and elderly.
News of the righteous monk who gives generously spread like lightning among the people. They loved him because he fed them with the essence of his heart. Anba Jacobus ordained him as a priest, blending the virtue of giving with prayer, and his service flourished among the people. This revered event took place in 1860, after one year of his service in Minya.

💚 Presidency of Al-Muharraq Monastery and the Story of His Dismissal
Father Paulos spent five years serving in Minya, after which he returned to Al-Muharraq Monastery and became its abbot in 1866. He tonsured forty monks in a single week, among whom was Hegumen Mikhail El-Behairi. However, disagreements deepened, problems multiplied, and the circle of division widened among some monks due to his excessive giving to the poor from the monastery's funds. The story of the dismissal of Hegumen Paulos El-Delgawy can be outlined in the following points:

However, disagreements deepened, problems multiplied, and the circle of division widened among some monks due to his excessive giving to the poor from the monastery's funds. The story of the dismissal of Hegumen Paulos El-Delgawy can be outlined in the following points:
- Pope Demetrius II (1862–1870) had a disagreement with Hegumen Abdel Malak El-Hory, the former abbot of Al-Muharraq Monastery, and dismissed him. He appointed Hegumen Paulos El-Delgawy as the abbot because he admired his holiness and because Paulos hailed from Delga, the Pope's own village.
- In 1870, Pope Demetrius II, who supported Hegumen Paulos El-Delgawy, passed away. A small group of monks seized the opportunity to depose him because he had emptied the monastery's safe to feed the poor. They went to the Papal Vicar, Anba Mark, Metropolitan of Beheira, demanding his dismissal, and the Vicar complied, appointing Hegumen Mikhail El-Aboutigi in his place.
- Following his dismissal, wishing to preserve the peace of the monks and the stability of the monastery, Hegumen Paulos El-Delgawy left willingly and contentedly. He went to the Monastery of Saint Bishoy, where he lived for three months, and subsequently moved to El-Baramous Monastery, where he spent eleven years. He was accompanied by four of his prominent disciples; three of them were consecrated as bishops in 1881: Hegumen Mikhail El-Masry (Anba Athanasius, Bishop of Sanabo), Hegumen Okladios El-Miri (Anba Peter, Metropolitan of Ethiopia), Hegumen Okladios El-Khalidi (Anba Mattheos, Bishop of Ethiopia), and the fourth was his biological brother, Hegumen Soliman El-Delgawy, who later served in Fayoum.
🤎 The Episcopate
"Oh, the depth of the riches both of the wisdom and knowledge of God! How unsearchable are His judgments and His ways past finding out!" (Romans 11:33). This verse perfectly applies to Hegumen Paulos El-Delgawy. At El-Baramous Monastery, his relationship deepened and the bonds of love strengthened between him and Hegumen John the Scribe, who later became Pope Cyrillos V, the 112th Patriarch, who occupied the Throne of St. Mark for the longest duration (1874–1927).
When Pope Cyrillos V found that the people of Fayoum and Giza were in dire need of a good shepherd to lead them to green pastures, he consecrated Hegumen Paulos El-Delgawy in 1881 as a bishop under the name Anba Abraam (

Anba Abraam went to Fayoum carrying the gentle breeze of the saints. He turned the bishopric headquarters into a sanctuary for the homeless, a refuge for orphans, and a haven for the sick. He frequently gave his clothes to the naked, his food to the hungry, and the metropolitanate’s funds to the poor secretly and openly, regardless of their denominations or religions. He prioritized prayer as the key to heaven, and through his prayers, stunning miracles and healings occurred. The Holy Bible was his guide; he memorized entire portions of it and read it fully every forty days.
His generosity knew no bounds. A miracle was related by the deacon Dr. Youssef Mansour: Anba Abraam left the Patriarchate in Cairo heading to his diocese in Fayoum by train. Before entering the railway station, a beggar approached him asking for alms. The bishop emptied his pockets completely and gave him everything, leaving nothing for himself! The metropolitan vicar, Hegumen Abdel Sayed, asked him in bewilderment, "Where will we get the price for the two tickets?" The bishop reassured him that God would provide everything, for He said, "Give, and it will be given to you." Upon entering the station, a man kissed his hand and said: "I was married and had no children, so I visited Fayoum previously seeking your prayers. God answered and granted me offspring! My wife and I decided to travel to Fayoum to fulfill my vows, but due to private reasons, we will delay our trip. I came here to return the two tickets, and God arranged this encounter to give you the vow offering and the two tickets!" The bishop accepted them, leaving Father Abdel Sayed completely awestruck!
On another day, a man gifted Anba Abraam a costly shawl, asking for his prayers. Soon after, a needy widow entered, and having no money, the bishop gave her the shawl. The widow went and sold it to the very same man who had gifted it to Anba Abraam, without knowing him! The man purchased it in astonishment, returned to the bishop, and asked, "Where is the shawl, Sayedna?" The saint looked up to heaven and replied, "Above!" The man offered him the shawl once more, marvelling at his purity and asceticism.
✨ His Asceticism, Simplicity, and Evangelical Firmness
At the beginning of his service in Fayoum, Anba Abraam went down one day to inspect the poor while they were eating. He noticed that the food prepared for him in the bishopric was far more luxurious than what was placed before the simple folk. He became deeply grieved and dismissed Sister "Basima," who was responsible for the kitchen, teaching everyone that all are equal.
When Pope Cyrillos V wished to elevate him to the rank of "Metropolitan," he humbly refused, stating, "The Holy Bible only mentions the rank of a bishop." He continued to hold the same simple wooden cross he used when he was a priest until his departure!
When the Pope summoned him to the Holy Synod to try a priest who had hosted a banned bishop in his home and offered him food, Anba Abraam attended, listened, and became righteously furious. He refused to sign the disciplinary decree, stating: "I find no reason to cut off this priest because he acted according to an evangelical commandment; does the Gospel not consider that whoever welcomes a stranger has welcomed Christ Himself? Did the Lord of Glory not say, 'I was hungry and you gave Me food; I was thirsty and you gave Me drink; I was a stranger and you took Me in' (Matthew 25:35)?". He declared his absolute rejection of the judgment and left the synod angrily. The synod sent after him to appease him and pardoned the priest out of reverence for his spiritual authority.
