"Many are those who come to the earth, but to the dust is their return. Few are those who depart from the earth to heaven; they lived among us as heavenly humans or earthly angels. They belong to the people of heaven, know its language, and carry its map in their hands. They do not hide this map from us, but rather reveal it to us in precise detail because they desire others to enter with them." With these eloquent, profound, and spiritual words, Father Dr. Hegumen Filotheos Farag, the priest of the Church of Saints Mark and George, mourned Hegumen Tawadros El-Moharraqi in his book, The Copts of Sudan, Part II.
Sohag Witnesses the Birth of a Great Monk
The Coptic Church in Sohag has a deep-rooted history. This city is bordered to the east by Akhmim, the city of martyrs, where the great Saint Anba Shenouda the Archimandrite lived and founded his famous monastery known as the White Monastery. In this governorate, which is considered one of the richest Egyptian governorates in terms of its righteous martyrs and Coptic heritage, Khalil Ibrahim was born on August 5, 1907, in Nجع El-Qird (El-Qird Village), which has now become a street named Bakhita Street.
Going to El-Moharraq Monastery
Khalil grew up in a simple family. His heart was aflame with divine love, and his mind pondered the biographies of the martyrs whose blood stained the land of Akhmim; he longed to consecrate his life to God as a monk. He fled from his family to the monastery, but they brought him back home—not through wisdom or persuasion, but by beating and threatening him. They rebuked him and accused him of laziness and escaping his responsibilities toward his family. Khalil lived with a sorrowful heart, feeling as though he was living in a world without clear features, wrapped in fog. This continued until the year 1926, which brought tidings of joy. He left his family quietly and headed to El-Moharraq Monastery to join its righteous monks. In the monastery, he memorized the Psalms, the Praises (Tasbeha), the tunes, and the Divine Liturgy, and he performed many tasks.
Monasticism and Priesthood
Khalil spent two years in the monastery under probation. The monks bore witness to his spiritual struggles and his love for knowledge, so he was recommended. Anba Pachomius I, the abbot of the monastery, ordained him a monk on the Paramon of Christmas (January 6, 1928) with the name Tawadros (Theodoros), which means "Gift of God." The ordination took place in the monastery’s presidential residence, as was the ancient custom, in the presence of a group of priests and monks. Four years later, he received the grace of the priesthood at the hands of Anba Agapius the Great, Bishop of Sanabo, Dayrout, and Qosqam (1929–1964), along with his monastic brother, Monk Menas El-Moharraqi. In 1933, both were elevated to the rank of Hegumen (قمصية).
Service in Sohag
Hegumen Tawadros was filled with grace and virtue. He possessed multiple talents and loved preaching and teaching. He served for ten years in the Diocese of Sohag:
  • Two years at the Church of Saint Abu Sefein (Mercurius) in Akhmim.
  • A year and a half at the Church of the Virgin Mary in El-Galawya.
  • Five years at the Church of the Virgin Mary in El-Tawayel.
  • A year and a half returning to the Church of Abu Sefein, where he had served previously.
One of his contemporaries witnessed that he was simple, bold, intelligent, a man of few words, fluent in the Arabic language, proficient in the Coptic language, and gifted in church hymns. His sermons were short and purposeful. Among his achievements was printing the Khoulagy (Liturgy Book) and the Agpeya (Book of Hours).
Leaving El-Moharraq and Going to the Syrian Monastery
In 1962, His Holiness Pope Kyrillos VI wished to appoint Hegumen Qozman Bishay El-Moharraqi as the abbot of El-Moharraq Monastery. Some monks objected because he had been out in the service for several years, and there were others in the monastery more capable of managing it and administering its affairs. When the Pope insisted on his decision, the monks also stood firm in their refusal. Consequently, the Pope decided to transfer five Hegumens to other monasteries: Botros El-Balansouri (named after his town in Abu Qurqas), Abdel Maseeh, Domadius, Sourial, and Tawadros, who settled in the Syrian Monastery (Deir El-Suryan). Hegumen Mattas El-Suryani praised him in front of Hegumen Daniel El-Moharraqi, saying: "The entire system of monastic rule in the Syrian Monastery that we live by to this day is thanks to what Hegumen Tawadros El-Moharraqi handed down to us."
Service in Sudan
Years passed, and Hegumen Tawadros was an honorable example in the Syrian Monastery, but his life there did not last long. In 1965, His Grace Anba Daniel, Metropolitan of Khartoum (1968–2000), chose him to serve with him, and he obeyed. He served in the Church of Anba Antonios in Kadugli, South Kordofan, from 1965 to 1971. When he fell ill, Anba Daniel delegated him to Khartoum to serve in the Church of the Two Martyrs (Saint Mark and Saint George) in 1973. Despite his illness which eventually confined him, he continued to resist his ailments and preach the Kingdom of God, carrying the message of Jesus Christ to everyone.
In his service, Hegumen Tawadros focused on education, solving problems, and pastoral visitation. He cared deeply for the Sacrament of Confession, and many confessed to him, including Anba Daniel, Metropolitan of Khartoum, Anba Elijah, the current Bishop of Khartoum, and Anba Daniel, Bishop of Sydney. He opened doors of hope for everyone. Despite his own pains, he carried the burdens of others and wiped away their tears, leaving behind beautiful memories until he became the sweetest memory in their lives. Those who gathered around him found rest from their pains as he shared his experiences, sufferings, and the work of God in his life.
In Sudan, he was considered a theological scholar and was likened to an intellectual and spiritual university. Scholars came to him and increased in knowledge, while the simple came and increased in simplicity. His cell was a literary salon where he discussed Taha Hussein and El-Aqqad and narrated stories from the East and the West.
His Love for Knowledge and Education
Hegumen Tawadros learned to read and write in the monastery. He mastered the Coptic language and became a scholar in Arabic; he entered the monastery illiterate and left it for service as a writer and a poet! In 1947, during the presidency of His Grace Anba Pachomius II (1947–1962), he founded the two schools of El-Moharraq Monastery (elementary and preparatory within one wall) in Rezqat El-Deir to educate the children of the neighboring villages. He taught Arabic there and supervised their administration. During his time at the Syrian Monastery, he taught Arabic to the monks, including Anba Missael, Bishop of Birmingham, England, when he was a monk named Monk Missael El-Suryani. In Khartoum, he built schools and taught many people the Arabic language.
His Ways of Comforting People
If a sick person complained to him about their illness, he would tell them about his own numerous ailments, mentioning that he had undergone more than twenty surgeries, and his stories of operations became a source of comfort.
If a woman complained about her husband, he would ask her not to be proud toward him, but to love him and submit to him, so that he would become her captive and live willingly in her bond. When the complaint came from the husband, he would emphasize to him that he could not live without her, and that he must protect, uplift, and honor her before people, as womanhood is honored in the person of Saint Mary. When the complaint was about a general problem at home, he would recite a verse of poetry that calmed the complainant and brought them rest!
His Life in Five Words
His life can be summarized in five words, matching the five wounds of Christ, the five loaves of bread, the five lamps of the virgins, and the five talents. The five words of our father are:
  1. The Persevering Priest: He was diligent in his service, prayers, preaching, teaching, and caring for his people with all honesty and love.
  2. The Patient Sufferer: He lived a life of patience and drank the cup of pain in his illness, his monastic trials, and his departure from his monastery.
  3. The Revolutionary Monk: He lived in the awe of God; he would surge like the Nile River during a flood, and then flow in gentleness and calmness, watering the barren land.
  4. The Thankful Saint: He was thankful to God during his trials and illness, never murmuring against Him or turning away from Him.
  5. The Poetic Man of Letters: When he spoke, you felt you were standing before a sensitive, deeply expressive writer.
An Answered Prayer
The pharmacist Ayad Fikry sent me a message saying: "I live in the Burei neighborhood in Khartoum. Mr. Ibrahim, one of the sons of the Church of the Two Martyrs (Saint Mark and Saint George), used to honor me by visiting my pharmacy accompanied by Hegumen Tawadros. One day, Abouna came to the pharmacy while I was smoking. I felt ashamed before him, apologized, and asked him to pray for me so that I could quit smoking. That night, I dreamed that I was attending a wedding inside the church, and I noticed that I was smoking a cigarette. I rushed to the back to leave the church just as Abouna was entering. I apologized to him because he saw me smoking. When I woke up, I did not smoke. When Abouna visited, I told him about the dream, and he playfully said to Mr. Ibrahim: 'Do you hear that, Ibrahim?'"
Departure (Niaha)
Hegumen Tawadros carried the cross of illness and underwent several surgeries in Khartoum and London. He remained paralyzed during the last ten years of his life without murmuring, often saying: "O Lord, make it for discipline, not for torture." This continued until the spring season arrived to diffuse the scent of flowers, and also for people to shed tears of sorrow over the cups of roses. He departed this life at dawn on Wednesday, April 22, 1998, at 3:56 AM, after living 91 years, 74 of which were spent as a monk. Remarkably, he put on white priestly vestments on the eve of his departure; he felt his departure from this vanishing world to the glory of heaven, so he prepared himself with the most beautiful garments he owned.
On the morning of April 23, the funeral prayers were held at the Church of the Two Martyrs, headed by the Papal Delegate, Anba Pachomius, Metropolitan of Beheira, Anba Daniel, Anba Serapamon, Bishop of Omdurman, along with priests, monks, a host of statesmen, and church delegations. After the elegies, the St. George scout team carried the coffin to the tunes of funeral music, followed by the clergy and the congregation. Then, the hearse carried him to the cemetery where he rested in peace.
