Fathers of Al-Muharraq Monastery
The Monk Abd Maryam the Ethiopian (Prophecies Fulfilled)
The scholarly Bishop Anba Lucas narrated the following in his book, Attaining the Goal in the Life of the Successor of Anba Abram (pp. 222-224):
There was an Ethiopian monk of great piety and righteousness named Abd Maryam (Gabra Maryam in Ethiopian). He lived in the Monastery of Saint Takla Haymanot in Ethiopia for a time, then went to Jerusalem, and finally settled in Al-Muharraq Monastery at the age of fifty.
Before his departure (passing), he fell ill, and Priest Youhanna the Ethiopian was serving him. Fifteen days prior to the passing of Archpriest Mikhail El-Beheiry, Abd Maryam saw a vision of a tall, handsome man with yellow hair who said to him: "After fifteen days, you will travel to Jerusalem, so where is your passport?" Abd Maryam replied: "I am sick and do not have the strength to stand and give it to you; it is there in the alcove behind you!"
When Monk Youhanna came to him, Abd Maryam asked him: "Have you buried the departed Archpriest?" Youhanna replied in astonishment: "Who informed you?!" Abd Maryam said: "I heard musical melodies and exquisite hymns filling the monastery, and a herald proclaiming that he is a saint and a chosen one!" Monk Abd Maryam passed away exactly fifteen days later, just as he had seen in his vision.
Archpriest Youssef Al-Muharraqi (His Body Did Not Decay)
Pope Demetrius II, the 111th Patriarch, was originally the abbot of the Monastery of Saint Macarius (Anba Makar). After becoming Pope, he appointed his biological brother, Archpriest Youssef Al-Muharraqi, as the abbot of Saint Macarius Monastery, and the monks accepted him due to his great holiness.
During Great Lent in 1976, restoration and expansion works began at the Church of Saint Macarius by removing large amounts of debris to reach the original floor of the church. As excavation continued, a protrusion appeared on the side of the northern wall in the shape of a vault painted in blue. Underneath the vault, a coffin measuring more than two meters in length was discovered. It later became clear that this was the coffin of Archpriest Youssef, the monastery's abbot in the late 19th century. Remarkably, his body had not decayed to this day. The coffin was placed inside the sanctuary, where it was witnessed by several monks.
Father Abdel Maseeh Al-Jawli Al-Muharraqi (The Simple Monk)
When we entered the monastery, we heard about a simple monk named Father Abdel Maseeh Al-Jawli. He only memorized the first part of the Reconciliation Prayer in Coptic from the Liturgy of Saint Basil. From the Agpeya (the Coptic Book of Hours), he only knew the last three passages of the Third Hour: "O Heavenly King... As You were with Your disciples... Whenever we stand in Your holy sanctuary..." Whenever he heard the church bell, he would rush to the church. During the Liturgy, he would loudly pray the parts he memorized, whether the leader of the prayer was a bishop or a priest, and then stand in total silence until the end of the service.
Archpriest Menas (Manqarios) Al-Muharraqi recounted a story about his extreme simplicity and holiness, saying: One day, Father Abdel Maseeh went to visit his family in Al-Jawli in Manfalut. He sat in front of a shop owned by a Christian merchant. Consequently, crowds gathered, and the merchant's sales drastically increased. Right next to him was a non-Christian merchant who asked the father to sit in front of his shop as well, hoping to receive a blessing. The father replied with childlike simplicity: "No, you are not a Christian!"
A fire of jealousy ignited in the neighbor's heart, and the man decided to take revenge on the father. He placed poison inside two pies made by his wife, took them, and gave them to the father to lure him over. Father Abdel Maseeh accepted them with simplicity and placed them in the pocket of his cassock (Faragiya). Along the way, two children he did not know met him and asked for a gift. He pulled out the two pies and gave them to the children. As soon as they ate them, they collapsed to the ground and died immediately.
The authorities arrested the father and interrogated him. He recounted everything that had happened between him and the merchant. The forensic medical report arrived, confirming that the children died of poison. The absolute shock came when it was discovered that the two boys who died were actually the sons of the very merchant who had plotted to kill the father! When confronted, the merchant confessed, and both he and his wife were prosecuted and imprisoned.
Archpriest Daniel Daoud Al-Muharraqi (The Theologian)
He entered monasticism at Al-Muharraq Monastery on June 20, 1906, and received the grace of the priesthood on May 5, 1918. In 1930, he published his profound theological book, The Pearled Contracts in Explaining the Doctrines and Superiority of Christianity. Archpriest Mina Al-Muharraqi reprinted it in 2006. This book bears witness to his vast knowledge, to the extent that Anba Gregory considered him one of the finest scholars of the monastery. In his own book about Al-Muharraq Monastery, Anba Gregory recorded praise from Professor Shaker Basilios, the famous Coptic language scholar who directed the Monastic School, stating:
"The book 'The Pearled Contracts' does not even present a full picture of Archpriest Daniel's vast knowledge. He was a treasury for biblical exegesis—an interpretation perfectly aligned with the spirit of the early Church Fathers and Orthodox dogma. He was frequently consulted to resolve complex dilemmas in Holy Scripture and theology."
He assumed the leadership of the monastery on March 16, 1937. During his time, he built a 100-meter portion of the southern wall of the monastery, mimicking the style of the wall built by Anba Pachomius I. He also built the first floor of the great eastern gate and its adjoining 110-meter northeastern wall, constructed six monastic cells in the courtyard, and purchased 34 acres of land to add to the monastery's endowments. He left the leadership of the monastery in November 1939 and passed away on February 21, 1961 (13 Amshir), joining the ranks of the righteous in Paradise.
Archpriest Youhanna El-Etlidmi Al-Muharraqi (Scholar and Scribe)
His Grace Anba Gregory testified of him in his book about Al-Muharraq Monastery, noting that he was a profound scholar and scribe. He was born in Etlidem, Abu Qurqas center, Minya. He arrived at the monastery in 1842, became a monk, and received the grace of the priesthood in 1845 during the leadership of Archpriest Abdel Malak El-Hory. He was virtuous and wise, earning the love and respect of all the abbots he lived under. He hand-copied numerous manuscripts, 64 of which survive to this day, including books of the Holy Bible, Katameros (Lectionaries), Psaliyas, Explanations, Homilies, and Liturgy books (Euchologion), with the latest dated 1886.
Archpriest Shenouda Al-Muharraqi (The Ritual Scholar)
The fathers of Al-Muharraq Monastery used to call the priest responsible for the church building and hymns the "Nazir" (Overseer). His duties included distributing liturgical roles among the monastic priests, leading the prayers, ringing the bells, preparing the church candles and oil lamps, blessing the vestments (Tunya), and instructing priests on liturgical rubrics. He had a designated spot to stand in the church. If a bishop visited the monastery to pray a liturgy, the Nazir priest would still lead certain prayers before the monastery's abbot out of respect for his specialized role over church rituals.
He was born as Isaac in 1912 in El-Ballut, Qousiya. His father was Abdel Malak Ibrahim Mikhail, and his mother was Salouma Hanna Helmy. He had a brother named Benjamin and another named Matthew, who also became a monk at Al-Muharraq Monastery under the same name. Isaac became a monk in July 1933 under the name Father Shenouda, which means "Son of God."
It is recorded that Father Shenouda memorized most of the church hymns. Despite this, he possessed the humility of true scholars and the spirituality of saints. He was an irreplaceable encyclopedia of monastery rituals. One unforgettable instance demonstrating his exceptional sharpness occurred when his biological brother, Archpriest Matthew El-Balluti, passed away. During the funeral prayer, Father Shenouda sat in the third chorus weeping bitterly. As the monks prayed, they forgot to recite the Adam Psali hymn which begins with: "This soul for which we have gathered, O Lord, rest it in the Kingdom of Heaven..." Suddenly and unexpectedly, Archpriest Shenouda called out to the monks from the third chorus in a thunderous voice, saying: "Wait! Recite the Adam Psali found on page...!" leaving the monks completely astonished by his attentiveness despite his deep grief.
Due to his spirituality, reverence, vast ritualistic knowledge, and profound love for the church, he served as the confession father for most of the monastery's monks. He remained the overseer of the ancient historic church for thirty years. One day, he suffered an abdominal hernia, which was misdiagnosed as a common cold or colic. On the third day, Father Theophilus Al-Muharraqi took him to Dr. Wehbe in Qousiya, who realized it was an incarcerated umbilical hernia and ordered them to go to the El-In Hospital in Assiut immediately. Father Theophilus returned to the monastery to get permission from Archpriest Barsoum, the abbot at the time, and they went to the hospital the following day. Unfortunately, Archpriest Shenouda collapsed in front of the operating room door and passed away peacefully on October 24, 1978. When His Holiness Pope Shenouda III learned of his passing, he grieved deeply and remarked: "The monasteries have lost a true treasure."
The Monk Ayoub Al-Muharraqi (The Enigmatic Monk)
He was truly a baffling enigma, cut from the cloth of the desert fathers of the early centuries. Before entering monasticism, his name was Zaher, and he worked as a tailor. He lived for forty-two years as a monk without knowing how to read or write, and he did not even memorize a single psalm! Yet, he never sorrowed over this; instead, his heart was entirely filled with peace.
Among the rare stories told about him: once, during Vespers Incense, Archpriest Shenouda (the church overseer) asked him to pray the Ninth Hour Gospel, which begins with "When the apostles returned, they told Him all that they had done..." Because of his absolute simplicity, he did not comprehend the prompt and naively replied: "How should I know if they returned or didn't return!"
He never closed the door or windows of his cell—neither in summer nor in winter! Remarkably, he never caught a cold or fell ill, never took any medication, and never visited a doctor his entire life. He lived most of his days wearing a single tunic that he never replaced or washed, making it heavy with layers of accumulated desert dust.
In his cell, he never slept on a bed. Instead, he would nap on a chair for short intervals. For several years, he was responsible for the monastery bell. He would ring the first bell for the Midnight Praise and wait until the praise ended to ring the second bell for the Offertory of the Liturgy. After the second bell, he would walk over to the monks' cells area, known as the Courtyard, and sleep on a wooden bench for an hour until the rising sun hit his face, prompting him to wake up.
He owned virtually no earthly possessions. Whenever he felt hungry, he would knock on the cell of a monk he knew and ask for food. No matter how much they offered, he would only take his immediate need. He routinely took one holy oblation loaf (Qurban) daily, eating it while it was still warm, surviving on it for long hours. On Samaritan Woman Sunday during Great Lent, wanting to say something to comfort himself, he stood in his cell playfully speaking to the memory of the biblical character, saying: "O Samaritan, O Samarmer..." His face used to shine as bright as the sun, a story told to me by Archpriest Daniel Al-Muharraqi as an eyewitness.
In the final week of his life, he began experiencing severe colic, and his abdomen became noticeably distended. Due to extreme exhaustion, he retired to his cell, where they offered him a warm drink. He was too weak to drink it and kept groaning, yet his face remained beautifully radiant until he passed away. Amazingly, the funeral of this simple monk—who held no priestly rank—was an event so grand that it had never been seen before in Al-Muharraq Monastery, making it difficult to...
