By: Fr. Karas Al-Muharraqy

Words rush to praise him, for he lived as a burning candle illuminating everyone around him. He possessed a humble heart enwrapped in light and filled with love, living in absolute austerity, content and satisfied, thereby becoming enriched with the wealth of the spirit. He ignited hearts with zeal for virtue through his solid writings, precise interpretations, and delicate poetry. Holy verses flowed from his lips and poured into the hearts of his listeners, just as dew drops fall upon the crowns of flowers, filling them with vitality and increasing their freshness. He is Archdeacon Naguib Gerges, the Old Testament professor at the Theological Seminary of Al-Muharraq Monastery.
💙 A Holy Childhood
Mit Damsis is an ancient town in the Daqahlia Governorate, where people still flock to attend the celebrations of the great martyr Saint George. Scholars still remember it as the birthplace of the revered scholar and capable Old Testament exegete, Archdeacon Naguib Gerges Markos, who was born on October 13, 1915. His birth was a radiant night for a family that nurtured his heart with faith. His father, Gerges Markos, was a righteous man, and his mother, Helena, was a virtuous and affectionate woman. Naguib was the fourth among nine siblings: Fahmy, Tamer, Amin, Naguib, Abdo, Sami, Farida, Mofida, and Fifi.
His eldest brother, Fahmy, received the grace of the priesthood under the name Father John Gerges at St. Mark’s Church in Shoubra, becoming a companion in service to the late Hegumen Mikhail Ibrahim and Hegumen Markos Daoud. When his father moved to work in Mit Ghamr, Naguib joined the Coptic School and obtained his primary school certificate in 1928.
❤️ Between Monasticism and the Seminary
Naguib was filled with the virtues of the Spirit, wishing to spread his wings, fly, and sing in the spiritual heavens. He left the world and headed to the Monastery of Saint Anthony at the young age of fifteen! However, his eldest brother, Fahmy, went after him and convinced him to return home, and Naguib obediently complied. In his memoirs, Naguib wrote: "In 1930, when I resolved to go to the monastery with my friend Aziz Amin, I used to isolate myself at times and pray with persistence and tears that the Lord would guide me to what is good. One day, after I finished praying on the roof of the house, I found my brother Fahmy sitting at his desk, holding an envelope containing printed verses that I had never seen before. He asked me to take a paper, and when I pulled one, I read: 'Wait on the Lord; be of good courage, and He shall strengthen your heart; wait, I say, on the Lord!' (Psalm 27:14). We executed our plan and went to the monastery, but our families came and brought us back."
The idea of monasticism ended after his family insisted on his presence with them. Naguib decided to complete his education, obtaining his Baccalaureate with honors in 1933. However, he refused to fulfill his family's wish to join a secular university, insisting instead on enrolling in the Theological Seminary in Cairo in 1934 to offer himself as a pleasing sacrifice before God. Traits of holiness began to be drawn upon his face at an early age. He was discipled by the holy Archdeacon Habib Girgis, who recognized his sublime spirit, noble manners, brilliance, seriousness, love, and serenity. Habib Girgis nominated him for the clergy after Naguib obtained the diploma of the Theological Seminary in two years, ranking first in his class in 1936. Habib Girgis praised him with the finest words in a letter of recommendation sent to His Grace Anba Sawiris, Metropolitan of Minya, stating: "If I could find ten people of Naguib's caliber, the Church would return to the golden age of Athanasius!"
💜 Family Life and Asceticism
Naguib clothed himself in purity from his youth and lived as a beautiful flower. The time came for him to become a loving husband and father; he married Miss Lily Tawfik in 1964, a graduate of the Teachers' School. They were blessed with Michelle and Mary, whose eyes opened to the Word of God. He taught them both English and Arabic, and they excelled in them. He turned his heart into a sanctuary of happiness and protection for them. He used to accompany his daughter to the train station until she became a physician and married Father Augustinos Elia, a priest at the Church of Saint George in Al-Malkiya Al-Bahriya, Mallawi.
His daughter described her father, who labored for her education, saying: "He was gentle-mannered, burning like a candle, carving into stone to bring his books to light. He was famous for the precision of his interpretations, consecrating his life to service and education. In gathering information, he was like a bee treating books as flowers; his thoughts flowed in service like rivers, and his poems resonated on occasions like musical strings."
Despite his numerous books and extensive service in various churches, he passed away in a simple rented house on El-Deiry Street in Mallawi. He once told Mr. Tamer Amin, the Greek and Coptic language professor at Al-Muharraq Seminary: "I write the book... and after extensive research, exploration, and exhausting effort in preparing it, the publishing house prints it and profits from it, while they give me nothing but a few copies of the book—the price of which does not even cover the cost of eye drops for the eyes that stayed awake all night to write it!"
💚 Service in Zagazig and Mallawi
At the age of fourteen, Naguib’s family moved to Zagazig, where his talent for writing, poetry, and theater flourished. It became clear that a bright light had emerged from a righteous man whose face radiated a wondrous gleam of purity, destined for a great future in the Church. After his graduation, he served in Zagazig, preaching and founding the Coptic Faith Society, while focusing on meaningful theatrical activities. When he moved with his family to Mallawi in 1936, he brought great renown to its pulpit. He proposed establishing a girls' school in Tanda; the idea was warmly welcomed, the school was built, and he took charge of its administration. He also founded an orphanage. After years spent in service, he was ordained by Anba Sawiris, Metropolitan of Minya, as an Archdeacon in 1945 at the age of thirty. He was invited to the priesthood in many churches but humbly declined out of ascetic devotion.
🤎 Teaching at the Seminary
The Seminary was an integral part of Archdeacon Naguib Gerges’s life. He spent most of his time traveling to teach and isolating himself to prepare materials. His students witnessed that he was exceptional in his explanations and profound in his knowledge. Thus, he earned the privilege of teaching at three theological seminaries: Minya, El-Balyana, and Al-Muharraq.
He began teaching at the Theological Seminary of Al-Muharraq Monastery between 1976 and 1982. At the Minya Seminary, where he taught since its establishment in 1976, he taught Homiletics and Pastoral Theology. However, his name became permanently linked with the Old Testament, a field in which he excelled in teaching and exegesis. God endowed him with a sober mind, pure thoughts, and a clean heart, making him revered by all.
🔬 Establishing Societies
Archdeacon Naguib Gerges succeeded in establishing and managing Christian societies, setting precise bylaws for their operation. He firmly believed that societies were a driving force for the Church's revival, providing a space where believers could gather for prayer, hymns, and hearing the Word of God. Therefore, he founded the "Sons of the Church Society" in Zagazig, and upon moving to Mallawi, he established the "Orthodox Peace Society." People flocked to it to listen to his moving sermons and magnificent biblical exegesis.
📚 His Monumental Writings and Volumes
The revered scholar possessed all the tools for academic research. He owned a vast library filled with reference books and was fluent in several languages: Coptic, Hebrew, Greek, English, French, and Arabic. This enabled him to find solutions to complex difficulties encountered in biblical exegesis. His writing talent emerged during his secondary school years when he began authoring his first book, The Body, publishing its first edition in 1940 and the second in 1970.
His books occupied a prestigious position in the Coptic library due to their extreme precision and the importance of their topics. His published works include: Interpretations of the Books of Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, Deuteronomy, Joshua, Judges, Ruth, 1 Samuel, 2 Samuel, 1 Kings, and 2 Kings, alongside his books: The Crying Voice, The Body, Divine Realities in the Sacrament of Baptism, and The Church of Glories.
This is in addition to other unpublished research, including: The Seven Sacraments of the Church, Various Sermons (three volumes), Notes on the Old Testament (four volumes), Notes on Homiletics and Pastoral Theology, and numerous articles written for the magazine "Fruits of the Spirit" in 1938 and the newspaper "Al-Jihad" in 1939. In choosing his topics, he was courageous, and for his Church, he was deeply zealous.
🌺 The Poet, Playwright, and Hymnographer
The Archdeacon was an inspired playwright who firmly believed in the role of the theater in building Coptic awareness, engaging youth in meaningful services, and investing their talents in constructive cultural work through which they could discover the history of our Church, its saints, and its righteous martyrs. He began his theatrical activity at the tender age of sixteen at the Sons of the Church Association in Zagazig! He founded a theatrical troupe in 1936 AD, where he wrote stories, drafted screenplays, and undertook directing. In his personal memoirs, he left a precise record of his plays, along with the locations and dates of their performances. Many of his theatrical masterpieces won first-place awards in the Holy Synod's Festivals (Mahragan Al-Keraza). When His Holiness Pope Tawadros II visited Mallawi on March 2, 2015 AD, he watched the play Erianus, written by Archdeacon Naguib Gergis, at the theater of the Bishopric of Mallawi.
Our venerable scholar was also a gifted poet; he mastered the poetic meters (بحور الشعر) and excelled in selecting and crafting his words with exquisite precision, combining beauty of expression, sweetness of speech, and depth of meaning. Consequently, his fame spread, and crowds flocked to hear his poetry on special occasions. He composed spiritual hymns set to the melodies of the Coptic Church and left behind numerous poems and spiritual hymns in his private memoirs.
🌺 The Work of God in His Life
In his private memoirs, Archdeacon Naguib Gergis wrote the following account: "One year, while I was a student in the secondary section in Zagazig, I observed one of the fasts from its very beginning, whereas my brothers, who were with me in the same school, had not yet started fasting. One day, I returned from school at noon for lunch, and my brothers ate their meal. My mother felt deeply distressed because she had not prepared any fasting food for me. While she was expressing her sorrow, a cat suddenly brought a large, cleaned, and fully prepared fish and placed it upon the table! My mother glorified God and prepared it for my lunch."
🌺 Virtues Adored by Archdeacon Naguib Gergis
I do not believe that a preacher can truly touch souls unless he clothes himself with virtues, which shone like a crown upon the head of the Archdeacon. He was profoundly faithful in his ministry and labored abundantly. Once, upon returning from delivering a lecture at the Theological Seminary in Minya, he spent an entire winter night enduring the bitter cold at a railway station, yet he never murmured. Instead, he echoed the words of Saint Paul the Apostle: "But none of these things move me; nor do I count my life dear to myself, so that I may finish my race with joy, and the ministry which I received from the Lord Jesus, to testify to the gospel of the grace of God." (Acts 20:24).
His Grace Anba Gregorius praised him with the tenderest words, saying: "An ecclesiastic in whom there is no guile, one of the finest to graduate from the Theological College; a devout scholar and a beacon, and among the most competent to serve the Church and the pulpit with faithfulness, virtue, and knowledge..." Those who dealt with him described him as simple-hearted, pure in thought, gentle in his approach, and serene in disposition. Thus, he lived like his Master, who said: "Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls." (Matthew 11:29).
Despite the tribulations he endured, his pure soul soared into the vast space of freedom, and he loved giving. He never withheld his time, knowledge, or his meager money from anyone. He was exceptionally attentive to tithing, constantly examining himself to the extent that he kept a private notebook which he named The Tithes Journal. In it, he meticulously recorded what he had paid and what remained of his tithes, so he would never forget God’s right! He placed before his eyes the saying of the Lord: "It is more blessed to give than to receive." (Acts 20:35).
He likened the Church to a dovecote (pigeon tower), which cherishes peace and shuns conflict. He lived like a rock in silence, preferring to be wronged just like his Master, Jesus Christ, of whom it was written: "He was oppressed and He was afflicted, yet He opened not His mouth." (Isaiah 53:7). Thus, he walked through the valley of pain, stood by the river of tears, and remained steadfast before the specters of fear; thereby, the waves of evil receded, failing to submerge the vessel of his life or erase the prints of his footsteps.
He was also adorned with the virtue of humility, which the Church Fathers described as the adornment of all virtues. Despite his numerous talents, he was profoundly humble, resembling a majestic palm tree bent low by the weight of its abundant fruit. His students testified that they benefited greatly from him, both in Biblical knowledge and in Christian conduct. Despite his advanced age, he would carry handouts and books himself to deliver them to the students. Once, a female student at the Minya Seminary saw him and attempted to assist him by carrying the books, but he gently refused so as not to weary her!
🌺 His Love for the Holy Bible and Prayer
Archdeacon Naguib Gergis loved the Holy Bible from his youth, specializing in its study and teaching it at the Seminary. He published his renowned biblical commentaries to serve as a reference for generations. He read the Holy Scriptures dozens of times for research, preaching, and meditation alike, fulfilling the words of David the Prophet: "And in His law he meditates day and night." (Psalm 1:2). When he lectured to his students, they would savor the biblical text, experiencing the practical reality of the verse. He memorized entire portions of the Holy Bible; when scholars later examined his unpublished manuscripts, they found the verses written down without their respective chapter and verse references, for he would write entirely from memory, postponing the annotation of references to the final revision before printing.
Preaching and teaching never drew him away from a life of prayer. He prayed constantly in the church and at home, chanting many hymns he had composed himself. In his final years, he would retreat into his private chamber, standing before the icon of the Great Martyr Saint George, praying and singing in a soft, gentle voice. Indeed, there is nothing greater than for a human being to offer his life as a living sacrifice upon the altar of prayer out of love for his Creator, hallowing his lips with the melodies of praises and the chanting of Psalms.
🌺 His Departure
Winter arrived weeping and mourning a star that had shone brightly and then vanished, blending its rain with the tears of grief! Archdeacon Naguib Gergis departed in peace on November 18, 1991 AD, for the rest of the righteous is found between the wings of death! There, the soul takes flight to enjoy eternity, while the body steps toward decay in the soil of the transient earth. Crowds gathered to bid him farewell, deeply moved by his departure, and tears flowed abundantly over his loss. Yet, while humanity wept, the angels rejoiced; for heaven had gained a great servant, an inspired poet, and a talented writer... joining the ranks of the pure, fulfilling the saying: "Many a funeral among mankind is a wedding feast among the angels!"
The soul of our venerable scholar departed after a journey of giving that lasted more than sixty years, yet death could not silence the melody of the bird nor scatter the petals of the roses! He left indelible footprints in the fields of preaching, teaching, theater, poetry, authorship, and writing—thereby trading and gaining the five talents, fulfilling the word of the Lord: "Blessed are the dead who die in the Lord from now on." "Yes," says the Spirit, "that they may rest from their labors, and their works follow them." (Revelation 14:13).
He wrote with excellence, preached and guided, debated and convinced. The righteous man departed after receiving faith from our father Abraham, perseverance from Jacob, purity from Joseph, gentleness from Moses, zeal from Elijah, prayer from Samuel, praises from David, wisdom and poetry from Solomon, and tireless dynamic service and fervor from Paul the Apostle. Today, we praise him and take pride that such a venerable scholar taught in our Theological Seminary. By his pure life, he taught us that a teacher at the Seminary—and a former of future priests—must be a spiritual servant who loves the Church and the ministry, for perhaps his conduct and service benefit people far more than his academic lectures! The wise person is the one who looks upon this humble teacher, learns from him, and realizes that no matter what we possess, gain, or enjoy in this life, death will inevitably come to turn our life into a blank page, leaving us with nothing but our righteous deeds.
